' LAST Filed April 22, 1925 ATTORNEYS Patented Oct. 15, 1929 UNITED STATES.-
PATENroFFIcE GEORGE CLAUSING, OF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO V'U'LCAN CORPORATION, OF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO LAST Application filed April 22, 1925. Serial No, 24,993.
My invention relates to lasts and in particular to snap back lasts.
It is the object of my invention to provide a snap back last which will have the maximum of snap action possible within the limited area of a last.
It is a further object of my invention to provide such a last with a positive means of attachment of the last parts to one another.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the last partially in section cut away to show the arrangement of the links and spring; and
Figure 2 is a plan view of the arrangement of springs and link.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 is the toe part of the last and 2 is the heel part. The toe part has a cut away portion 3 which is relatively deep to accommodate the full arch of the spring 4 which also projects into the cut away portion 5 of the heel part 2. Near the bottom of these cut away portions relatively close to the bottom of the last parts are transverse anchor pins 6 and 7. The last parts are limited in their expanding movement by their adjacent shoulders 8 and 9. The last parts are further limited in their collapsing movement by their normally spaced faces 10 and 11 which form a V- shaped space between the last parts when in their expanded position. The forward half of the last'has a transverse semi-circular groove 12 to receive a corresponding transversely located partially circular shoulder 13 of the heel part. The center of this shoulder is occupied by a transverse hinge pin 14, the center of which is the center of movementof the parts one about the other. Mounted on this hinge pin are aipair of spaced links 15 the free ends of which are connected to the anchor pin 7 Other'links 16 are pivoted on the hinge pin 14 and are mounted on the heel anchor pin 6. A line drawn over the centers of the pins 6 and 7 never passes over the center of the pin 14.
I An elliptical spring having a high arch such as the spring 4 has its ends 17 hooked over the outside of the anchor pins 6 and 7, thus giving the maximum of spring and snap action within the limited area for such a construction in a last.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions of use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a snap back last, a toe part and heel part adapted to rock one on the other, :a toggle joint consisting of links pivoted on the center of movement of said last having the free ends pivoted to the respective last halves, pins supporting the free ends of the links and a clamping means engaging over and under said pins adaptedto yieldingly maintain said last parts in expanded position and to resist their movement to collapsing position.
2. In a snap back last, a toe part and heel part adapted to rock one on the other, a toggle oint consisting of links pivoted on the center of movement of said last having the free ends pivoted to the respective last halves, pins supporting the free ends of the links and a clamping spring extending over and engaging said pins adapted to yieldingly maintain said last parts in expanded position and to resist their movement to collapsing position, said links being arranged in spaced pairs with said spring therebetween.
3. In a snap back last, a toe part and heel part adapted to rock one on the other,'
a toggle joint consisting of links pivoted on the center of movement of said last having the free ends pivoted to the respective last halves, pins supporting the free ends of the links and a semi-circular clamping spring having inwardly bent portions hooked over the outside of said pins adapted to yieldingly maintain said last parts in expanded position and to resist their movement to collapsing position said links being arranged in spaced pairs With said spring therebetween, the centers of said pins carrying said spring being so arranged that a line drawn therebetween never passes over the center of movement of the last parts.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
GEORGE CLAUSING.
