LAST.
Application filed May 18, 1925. Serial No. 31,098.
@To allwho'm 'it may concern: i
, Be it known that I, GEORGE CLAUsiNG, a 'citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and nState of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had thereinto the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to lasts.`
It is the obj ect of my invention to provide a last which will stay in either expanded or collapsed position and which will yieldingly resist movement from one position to the other. Y Y
It is an additionalobject to provide a: last in which the spring element resisting such movement will havethe maximum eect torv the size of the spring and in which a new spring may bereadily substituted.
It is an. additional objectto provide a .spring having the maximum oi leverage im posed upon itwithin the limitediarea permissible in a last, utilizing for this purpose to increase the leverage, the link system of joining the parts to one another.
Referring to the drawings: y
Figure 1 is a side elevation partially lin section of a last showing the arrangement oi levers, links and spring; and
Figure 2 is a detail plan view of the lever, link and spring system. u i
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 is a toe part of a last and 2 is the heel part. The toe part is provided with a cut away slot 3 and the heel part with a cut away slot 4:; these slots are for the purpose of accommodating the link, lever and spring system.
The parts rock upon one another through'v a socket 5 and a knuckle 6 on the toe and heel parts respectively. The shoulders 7 and 8 below the knuckle joint limit the expanding movement of the last parts while the faces 9 and 10- of the' last parts limit the collapsing movement of the last.
The heel part of the last is provided with 11 passing through the cut awayslot l to the side walls of the heel partoi the last. This anchor pin carries pivotally the links 12 rwhich extend forwaidly to a pointl yWithin the toe part 1 in the' slot 3 ,where they are pivoted on the stud 13 which 'is carried in the elbow of the angular tivo ,nait leise 011e arm Qt which ,is
ing the middle portion thereof and has suspended in jaws 18 at the free end of the lever 17 a U-shaped spring 19 which has a free end turned over to form a hook 20 which engages with the forward side of a transversely located abutment pin 2l which extends through slots 22 in the links l2. The parts are so arranged that a line drawn between the center of the anchor pin 11 and the center of the stud 13 will pass over the center of the abutment pin 21 when the p-arts are moved from one position to the other, that is, from collapsed to expanded position.
.It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention, such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions of use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

3. Iiil a last, a toe part .and a. heel par@ adapted to rock on one another through a joint, a pair of spaced links connecting said parts, one end of said pair of spaced links being connected to one of said parts and the other end being pivoted to alever, a lever positioned between said links and pivoted in another of said parts and to one end of said pair of spaced links, a U-shaped spring connected to the free end of said lever engaging an abutment on one of the parts, and an abutment.
el. In a last, a toe part and a heel part adapted to rock on one'another through a joint, a pair of spaced links connecting said parts, one end of said pair of spaced links being connected to one of said parts and the other end being pivoted to a lever, a lever positioned between said links and pivoted in another of said parts and to one end of said pair of spaced links, a U-shaped spring connected to the free end of said lever engaging an abutment on one of the parts, and an abutment, the pivotal point of connection of the pair of spaced links with one of said parts being so arranged that a line drawn between the centers of the pivots will pass over the center of movement of the last parts as they move from one position to the other.
5. In a last, a toe part and a heel part, a pair of spaced links connecting said parts, a lever `positioned between said links and pivoted on one of said parts, a U-shaped spring carried on the free end of said lever, an abutment engaging the free end of said spring, whereby the movement of the parts is resisted from one position to the other.
6. In a last, a toe part and a heel part, a link connecting said parts, a lever pivoted o-n one of said parts, a spring carried on the free end of said lever, an abutment engaging the free end of said spring, whereby the movement of the parts is resisted from one position to the other, the points of connection of the link 'being so arranged that a line drawn between the centers thereof will pass yover the center of the abutment when the parts are moved from one position to the other.
7. In alast, a toe part and a heel part, a link connecting said parts, a lever pivoted y on one of said parts, a spring carried on the free end of said lever, an 'abutment engaging the free end of said spring, whereby the movement of the parts is resisted from one position to the other, the points of connection of the link being so arranged that a line drawn between the centers thereof will pass over the `center ofthe abut-ment lwhen the parts are moved rom'one position to the other, said abutment being adapted to Vpass through said "link which can move `freely with respect thereto.` A
