. LAST.
Application filed May 28, 1925. Serial No. 33,351.
My invention relates to lasts.
It is an object of my invention to provide a hinged last which will remain in either expanded or collapsed position and which will resist movement from one position to the other.
It is a particular object to provide last parts having a knuckle joint so that they can rock upon one another connected together by a link or links with the point of connection'in the heel part of the links on the heel anchor pin at a point relatively far forward and relatively near the joint or hinge while the forward ends of the links arerelatively far forward or remote from the hinged joint as they are located in the toe part of the last.
It is an additional object to provide such a last having a yielding spring member for maintaining the parts in either position or resisting their movement, such spring member being anchored below the point of connection of the linkswith the toe part and upon the connection of the links with the heel part.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the last parts partially in section to show the arrangement of the link and spring system;
Figure 2 is a plan view with the anchor pins broken away showing the arrangement of links and spring.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 is a toe part having a rear vertical face 2 and a eut-away slot 3. Transversely arranged across the slot on the rear face of the last is a semi-circular cut-away portion 4 adapted to receive the projecting knuckle 5 which is of partially cylindrical construction. The last parts are limited in their expanded movement by their faces 6 and 7 which are adapted to abut each other when the last parts are in expanded position. Thus abutting shoulders are provided beneath the knuckle joint. 8 designates the heel part which has a cut-away forward face above the joint designated 9 to permit of the parts collapsing. A groove 10 is also provided in this heel part to accommodate the ends of the links and spring. Located transversely of this groove and transversely of the heel part is an anchor pin 11 which is located relatively near the forward part of the heel and relatively near the center of movement of the last parts as they move through the knuckle joint. Mounted upon this anchor pin are apair of spaced links 12 which proceed forwardly into the slot 8 of the toe part 1 to a point relatively far within the the toe part where they are mount-ed upon a transversely located anchor pin 13 known as the toe anchor pm. Between these spaced links there is located a spring member desig nated 14 having an inverted V-shaped portion '15 and hooked ends 16 and 17 which pass beneath and are mounted against the anchor pin 11 and the transversely located spring anchor pin 18. This spring anchor pin is located beneath the toe anchor pin 13 and slightly to the rear of it. The parts are so arranged that a line drawn between the centers of the heel anchor pin 11 and the spring anchor pin 18 will pass over the center 19 about which the last parts move. As the distance between the centers of the pins 11 and 18 increases when the parts approach the so-called dead center of movement, the spring is flexed and resists the movement but having been moved from one position to the other and having snapped the last into the desired position it holds the last parts in such position yieldingly against further movement until a predeter mined force is applied to the parts to actuate them again. The links hold the parts together and prevent the spring from turning over laterally, thus maintaining the spring in its fully operative and effective position.
It is obvious that two springs and a single link may be used or a single spring and a single link may be used, or, under some con ditions, the spring only may be used.
I do not desire to confine myself to details but desire to comprehend Within my invention such modifications as may be necessary in order to adapt it to varying conditions of use.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a last, a toe part and a heel part adapted to rock one on the other, a link joining said parts mounted in anchor pins in the respective parts, one anchor pin being located relatively near to the center of movement of the parts and the other relatively far from the center of movement of the parts. yielding means mounted on the pin relatively near to the center of movement at one of its ends and its other end upon a third anchor pin relatively near to, but below, the anchor pin which is relatively far fr om the center of movement.
2. In a last, a toe part and a heel part adapted to rock one on the other, a link joining said parts mounted in anchor pins in the respective parts, one anchor pin being located relatively near to the center of movement of the parts and the other relatively far from the center of movement of the parts, yielding means mounted on the pin relatively near to the center of movementat one of its ends and its other end upon a third anchor pin relatively near to, but below, the anchor pin which is relatively far from the center of movement, said parts being so arranged that a line drawn between the centers of the anchor pins upon which the yielding means is located will pass over the center of movement of the last parts when they are moved from one position to the other.
8. In a last, a toe part and a heel part, links connecting said parts spaced from one another, anchor pins located in said parts for supporting said links, a spring connected to one of said anchor pins between said links, a third anchor pin at one side of said links for supporting the other end of the spring, said parts being so arranged that a line drawn between the centers of the anchor pins supporting the spring will pass over the center of movement of the last parts when they are moved from one position to the other. I
4. In a last, a toe part and heel partadapted to rock one on the other, a rigid link connecting said parts one to the other, pins in said last parts supporting the ends of said links, and a yielding means connecting said last parts one end of which is connected to one of the pins connected to one end of the link and the other end of the yielding means being connected to a third independent pin spaced from the other pins.
5. In a last, a toe part and heel part adapted to rock one on the other, a ri id link connccting said parts one to the ot ier, pins in said last parts supporting the ends of said links, and a yielding means connecting said last parts one end of which is connected to one of the pins connected to one end of the link and the other end of the spring being connected to a third independent pin spaced from the other pins, the axis of said link and said spring being so arranged as to coincide at the point of connectionof the link and spring on the common pin and diverge from that point of connection.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
