The invention relates to button attaching devices and more particularly to a vdevice capable of attaching buttons to upholstered articles.
The invention has as one of its primary objects to provide a device of the above character distinguished by its simplicity of construction and facility of operation which not only enhances its value both mechanically and commercially, but providesy a design of a strong and durable nature, and one that may be economically and quickly manufactured and easily assembled.
Many of the advantages and much of the commercial value and acceptability of the invention is attributed to the novel means employed for retaining the button attaching means within the device, these advantages being obtained particularly because of the rapidity with which the button may be detached rom the device during operation eXpediting the attaching of the buttons to the article and rendering possible the production of a commercial satisfactory article in a comparatively short time.
Other advantages and novel features of construction will loc made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially .when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein,

Figure 3 is a fragmentary plane view showing the particular means employed for retaining the button attaching portion in position upon the device, and
Figure 4 is a fragment-ary side elevation showing the button attaching portion in position,
Referring now to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the button attaching device which in general comprises the shank 11 tapering at one end into a point 12 and having a handle portion 13 secured upon the opposite end thereof. Sleeved upon the shank intermediate the ends and capable of a sliding movement relative thereto is a sleeve 14 having an enlarged bore l5 terminating short of the forward end thereof and forming the annular shoulder 16. Arranged within the bore 15 and surrounding the shank 1l is a com- -pression spring 18 bearing at one end against .construction and to prevent relative rotation between the shank and sleeve 14 the latter is formed with an elongated slot 20 arranged to `slidably receive a projection 21 formed upon the forward end of the sleeve 19. Any suitable means may be employed for effecting a sliding movement of the sleeve relative to the shank herein shown as comprising a member 22 rigidly secured to the sleeve 14 and having diametrically opposite projections 23 constituting handle portions for operating the sleeve 14.
For holding the button in position upon the device prior to attaching the same to the article the shank 11 is formed with a recess 24 of suliicient dimension to receive the button attaching clip 25 which has substantially the contour illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing. 'The sleeve 14 is provided with a forwardly extending projection 26'which in the normal position of the sleeve 14 engages the rear end of the clip 25 and effectively holds the latter within the recess. As shown in Figures 1 and 4 of the drawing diametrically opposite sidek walls of the recess adjacent the opposite endsof the clip are cut away as indicated at 27 and 28.` The cut-away portion 27 being so arranged as to expose to hooked portion of the clip to permit the latter to be readily attached to the article to be buttoned, while the cut-away portion 28 provides clearance for the connection between the clip and the button and holds the latter in position upon the clip.
In practice, the top surface of the cushion or article to be buttoned is chalked or marked at predetermined points or wherever it is desired to attach a button. The points of at.- tachment in the present instance, however, are so selected as to be in substantial vertical alignment with the attaching members designated by the numeral 29 in Figure 2 of the drawing. These attaching members may be separate wires secured to'the bottom of the cushion or they may be a part of the usual spring structure for the cushion. An attaching clip of the type illustrated is then securely placed within the recess 24 in the manner heretofore pointed out and the tapered or pointed end l2 of the shank 1l is forced through the fabric and padding of the cushion at the points designated upon the top surface thereof. As will be apparent from Figure 2 of the drawing the shank 1l is projected through the cushion until the attaching member 29 is substantially above the flared portion 30 of the hooked portion of the clip. A slight upward movement is then imparted to the instrument forcing the attaching member 29 within the hooked portion of the clip. The operator then retracts the sleeve 11i against the action of the spring 18 releasing the clip from the recess 24 and at the same time withdraws the instrument from the cushion. rlhe cushion in its attempt to regain its natural shape forces the button over the aperture formed by the shank 11 and thereby conceals the same.
Thus from the foregoing, it will be immediately apparent that the device herein shown and described is of simple construction and of a minimum number of parts and renders possible the production of a commercially satisfactory article which can be cheaply and durably manufactured.
What we claim as our invention:
l. In a button attaching device, a shank having a laterally opening recess for receiving a button attaching clip, and a retainer for said clip including a member shiftable upon said shank and having a part normally overlapping a portion of said recess.
2. In a button attaching` device, a shank having a laterally opening recess in one side thereof for receiving a button attaching clip, opposite side walls of said recess being cut away whereby an anchoring wire and the like for the button attaching clip may be received in said clip and recess while the clip is in said recess.
3. A button attaching tool including a hand manipulated shank having a pointed end for forming an aperture in a cushion and the like and provided adjacent said pointed end with a recess for receiving a button attaching clip, and means carried by the shank for holding said clip in said recess while an aperture is being formed by said shank but adapted to be moved relative to said shank while the latter is in the'aperture to permit of the removal of the button attaching clip.
t. A button attaching device including a pointed shank having a recess in a side wall thereof for receiving a button attaching clip, and a handle carried by the shank for manipulating the same into and out of a cushion and the like.
5. A button attaching device including a shank having a laterally opening recess for detachably receiving a button attaching clip, and retaining means for the clip including a member sleeved upon and shiftable longitudinally of the shank and normally holding the clip in the recess.
6. ln a device of the class described, a shank having a laterally opening recess for receiving a button attaching clip, and having means for making an aperture to receive said clip, and means sleeved upon said shank and co-operating with said recess for holding a button attaching clip in fixed relation with respect to said shank.
7. in a device of the class described, a shank having a laterally opening recess for receiving a button attaching clip and having means for making an aperture to receive said clip when disengaged from said recess, and means sleeved upon said shank and having a part normally overlapping the recess and detachably holding a button attaching clip in said recess in fixed relation with respect to said shank.
8. In a device of the class described, a shank having means for receiving a button attaching clip and an anchorage member for the clip, and means sleeved upon the shank and normally co-operating with the first mentioned means for holding a button attaching clip in fixed relation to said shank but shiftable relative to said shank to permit of the removal of said clip from said shank when said anchorage member is received in said first mentioned means.
9. In combination, a member adapted to be forced through a surface to form an aperture therein and havinO means for receiving an element adapted to be located in said aperture, and means associated with said receiving means for detachably maintaining said element in operative position, said maintaining means .being sleeved upon and movablefelative to said shank to release said element from said receiving means after the element is po-N sitioned within said aperture.
l0. In a device of the class described, a
member having means for holding a button attaching clip and having means upon the forward end thereof for piercing a surface to form an aperture for receiving said clip, a retainer for the clip slidably mounted upon the member aforesaid, and means upon said retainer for moving the same to release said element after the clip is positioned by said member within said aperture.
11. In a button attaching device, a shank having a laterally opening recess for receiving a button attaching clip, and retaining means for said clip including a member shiftable longitudinally of said shank and having a part normally extending over the recess aforesaid, and a handle for said member.
12. In a button attaching device, a shank having a laterally opening recess for receiving a button attaching clip, a handle for said shank, retaining means for said clip including a member shiftable longitudinally of said shank relative t said recess, and a handle for said member. A

In a button attaching device, a shank having a laterally opening recess for receiving a button attaching clip, retaining means for said clip including a member shiftable longitudinally of said shank and having a part movable over the recess, and yieldable means associated With said shank and member and normally holding said part over said recess.
14. In combination, a member having a pointed portion adapted to be forced through a surface to form an aperture therein and having a laterally opening slot adjacent the pointed portion for receiving a button atcaching clip, and spring enforced means carried by the member aforesaid normally holding said clip in said slot, and a handle carried by said spring enforced means whereby said means may be moved to release said clip.
