This invention relates to indexes and has for an object to provide an index adapted to contain at election a number of names on a sheet retracted by a spring roller into a housing of improved construction.

A further object of the invention is to provide an index having means associated with the housing for connecting the housing and the index carried thereby to and with an obl@ ject, such for instance as a telephone.

A further object of the invention is to provide an iinpoved type of index embodying all the features of integral housing and the internal construction.

invention comprises certain novel parts, elements, units, combinations, constructions, interactions and functions as disclosed in the drawings together with mechanical and functional equivalents thereof as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a conventional telephone showing in end elevation the '7 index attached thereto in operative position.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the index removed from its support.

Figure 3 is a top plan view of the index parts being broken away to show the internal l construction.

Figure 4t is a view of the index in rear elevation as indicated by arrow t at Figure 8.

Figure 5 is a transverse sectional View through the index taken on line 5 5 of Figure t.

Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

The improved index which forms the subject matter of this application comprises a housing composed of an integral sheet of inateri al having a back 10, a lower wall 11 and an upper wall 12. The device is preferably formed substantially as a triangle, the base of the triangle being that pai't hereinbefore referred to as the back 10. At the apex, lips 13 are formed bent backwardly upon the lower side 11 so as to space away the bottom and top from each other to permit a sheet of material 14 to pass substantially unobstructedly therebetween.

The ends of the housing are formed by integral ears 15 which serve to journal a shaft 1() extending longitudinally through the housing and carrying a spring roller 17 upon which is wound the sheet 14;. At Figure 3 the spring roller 17 is shown as a hollow cylinder with an enclosed spring 18 but it is to be understood that the particular type yof spring roller thus indicated is not essential to the invention and that any usual and ordinary c type of spring roller may be substituted there- Vilhile the device thus described is intended :I

22 and 23 of the housing are turned up to form guides to receive a card or other advertising sheet 24: with a tansparent sheet 25 covering the card for protection without obscuring the visibility. It will be noted specially from Figure 1 that the position of the top of the device is inclined to the horizontal so that the advertising matter contained upon the card 24 and visible through the transparent sheet 25 is in position to be readily observedby the user. The advertising` matter is, therefore, constantly before the user of the telephone or other article to which the index is attached.

`What I claim to be new is:

1. An index comprising a housing composed of an integral sheet of material, bent to form a back, a bottom and a top, integral ears forming ends of the housing, a spring roller journaled within the housing and cai# ried by the ears, and a sheet oi material Wound upon the spring roller and extending outwardly from the housing between the top and bottom.

2. An index comprising a sheet of integral material forming a back, a bottom and a top, said bottom and top being substantially in Contact atthe forward edge and forming` with the basl; a triangle, ears formed integral with the back and extending along the open ends oi the triangle, a spring roller ournaled upon the ears and Within the housing, and a sheet oi flexible material Wound upon the spring roller and extending` outwardly through the apex of the triangle.

5. 6. An index comprising a sheet ot' integral material bent to form a triangle, means at the base oi said triangle for attaching the housing to a support with one side of the triangle as an inclined plane, the edges of said side being turned upwardly and inwardly to form means for retaining` a Garda sheet oi' flexible material extendingv through the apex oit said housing, and resilient retraoting means for the sheet Within the housinni.
