Description
v'v. FRIEDMAN MATCH PACKET Filed O01;s 16. 1925 Nav. 29, 1927.
5.1m non cmhum WO2# 3x21 4 WEA/TOR William Friedman,
BY my* atented MATCH PACKET.
pplication led October 16, 1925. Serial No. 62,897.
rlhe objects of this invention are to provide a combination article compact in form, of handy size and shape, convenient to use, and of continued utility for a considerable time; to provide a structure by which memorandum or note leaves arel carried by and protected within the same protective covering employed for a packet of matches; to enable either` or both the pad and matches to be used readily; to enable the protective covering to be employed as a backing when writing on the pad; to utilize the matches as a stiffening rest for the backing of the pad; to utilize the packet covering to protect the leaves of thenpad when the matches are used up; to provide increased advertising space in connection with a packet of matches and increase the possible times=of the user seeing the advertisements; to secure simplicity of construction and desirability of the article; and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description,
Referring to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side view of a match packet with the protective covering enclosing both the pad and matches;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the protective covering between the matches and pad, protecting the matches and providing a backing for the pad; n
Figure 3 is a side elevation showing the protective covering drawn away from both the pad and matches; and Flgure 4 is a face view looking downwardly at the top of Figure 2.
`In the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated in said drawing, the reference numeral 1 indicates a strip of matches which may comprise as many rows as desired, two rows having been illustrated for convenience. This strip of matches is protected by a packet covering 2 which is doubled as at 3, at the lower or stem end of the matches to have one end portion of the covering providing a front cover 4 substantially as long as the matches and positioned at one side thereof, whereas the other portion of the covering eX- tends along the opposite side of the matches. This said other portion of the covering is comparatively long, extending further than the outer or tip ends of the matches, and is bent over said tip ends and back toward the stem ends of the matches, but unattached. This portion of the covering therefore provides an integral back andan insert portion 6 which may be inserted between the matches and the front cover 4. A staple 7 passes through the lower part of cover 4 and back 5 as well as through the match strip l for holding the parts together.
Included between the front cover 4 and the match strip l, and also held by the same staple 7, is a pad 8 of a number of sheets of paper preferably approximately in size and shape, the size and shape of the strip of matches so as to be readily and adequately included within the cover 2 and protected thereby. Said sheets forming the pad are on the opposite side of the matches from the attached long back 5, which therefore enable the loose or insert end 6 to be inserted either between the front cover and the pad as shown in Figure l or inserted between the pad and the matches as shown in Figure 2. In this latter position the insert 6 will constitute a smooth backing on which the leaves of the pad will rest when they are being written upon which accordingly makes the writing more legible and lwithout injury to the paper. At the same time, the matches l together with the back 5 and insert 6 combine to provide `a stiif support as well as a smooth surface. Regardless of what position the insert may be in, the leaves of the pad are well protected because of the back 5 and cover 4.
A suitable surface 9 is provided for striking the matches, this surface preferably being adjacent the staple on the front cover el. Whichever side it may be elected to have the striking surface 9 on, aii'ords protection against the flare of the match being struck igniting either the paper of pad 8 or the matches remaining in the strip because of the protective cover 4 and 5 which intervenesbetween.
By virtue of the inclusion of this pad within the protective covering, the said covering is very frequently bent back and comes within the direct view of the user, and therefore gives a valuable advertising space. Within the drawing I have shown an illustrated advertisement l0 on the inner surface of said cover. Likewise, the leaves of the pad afford valuable advertising space in conjunction with the space for writing, and I preferably so use them as indicated by advertisement l1 at the bottom of the leaves of the pad which still leaves ample room for any desired personal notes 12 on the remaining portion of the sheet.
Changes in the position of this advertising matter, and certainly any desired variation or application of wording or oth'er advertising matter may be indulged in Within the spirit of my invention, and other modificatlons and changes may be made in the manufacture and use of my invention without departing from the spirit or scope of t-he invention as set forth in ,the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, I'
lto be used as a writing pad, and means for providing asmooth backing between said pad and said strip of members, said backing means likewise receiving support from said strip of members.
2. An article of the class described, comprislng a strip of members having individual utility independent of each other, said members being so arranged as to constitute a relativel ri 'd su ort, a pad of a er attached therret1 andppada ted to lib pthereagainst, the leaves of sai pad being of such a character as to require an auxiliary support for the purpose of writing thereon, whereby said strip of members may function as the necessary support to permit the pad to be used as a writing pad. a front and a back cover, one of said covers having an extension adapted to be inserted between said strip of members and said pad of paper so as to rovide a smooth backing for said pad, oth said extension and saidpaper being sulpported by said members Ln Writing on tie paper.
3. An article of the class described, comprising a strip of members having individual `utility independent of each other, said members being so arranged as to constitute a relatively rigid su port, a pad of paper attached thereto andp adapted to lie thereagainst, the leaves of said pad being of such a character as to require an auxiliary support for the purpose of writing thereon, whereby said strip of members may function as t-he necessary support to ermit the pad to be used as a writing pad), and a cover having an extension adapted to be inserted between said strip of members and said pad of paper so as to provide a-smooth backing for said pad, both said extension and said paper being supported by said members in writing on the paper.
WILLIAM FRIEDMAN.
