Description

P. EBY.
TRANSPLANTING-BOX.
Eatented Jan. 25,1876.
No.l7Z.616.
INVENTOR WITNESSES" N4 Pizzas. PNOT UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER EBY, OF SALISBURY TOWNSHIP, LANCASTER ooUNTIr, .PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRANSPLANTING-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,616, dated January 25, 1876; application filed July 29, 1875.
T 0 all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, PETER EBY, of Salisbury township, near Kinzers P. 0., Lancaster county, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Transplant- Boxes, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is a modification of my transplanting-box patent dated February 23, 1875, No. 160,088, and consists in the manner of constructing the lower corners of the side piece so as to interlock and hold the bottom and sides together, thereby doing away with surrounding, frame-pieces, and grooves and sliding bottom, and making a cheaper and equally efficientbox without any extra appliances but the bottom and sides only.
The accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same by giving a brief description.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined pieces or sides. (Bottom not seen.) Fig. 2 shows one of the two Sides, and Fig. 3 the other or end, to illustrate the construction of p the combined lower interlocked corners.
The upper corners of the sides B and G are substantially the same as in the patent referred to-that is, the projecting ends I fit squarely into the upper notches J, respectively, but thelower corners differ in being provided with an interlocking device-that is, the side pieces 0 are also boxed out square, but have a bevel groove or slot on the upper and inner side at e, leaving the lower edge d straight on its outer face or butt end of the pieces 0. The projecting endls H on side pieces B have a'wedge-shaped tongue, f, of one-half its thickness. This wedge shaped tongue f fits into the bevel or wedge-shaped groove 6 aforesaid, the edge d of (J resting upon a straight ledge, g, along the outer side of said wedge-tonguef, so that the respective pieces B and O interlock by means of a kind of half-lap dovetail. The bottom, being made to fill the inner space between said sides, may be slightly beveled on its outer edge.
To explain the manner of fitting the respective pieces B O at their lower corners, on inspection it will readily be seen that, by first coupling B and 0 above and below, then successively the other two side pieces B G loosely, the four will jointly fit around the bottom, and, when pressed into close contact, firmly lock together, and tightly embrace the slightly-beveled bottom in such a manner as to allow of handling when filled with soil without any other appliance.
As an improvement upon my former Patent, No. 160,088, I claim The side pieces B B and G G, with their respective wedge tongue f, and ledge g, in combination with the bevel groove 0 and straight edge d, as and for the purpose shown and specified.
PETER EBY.
