SMOKING PIPE Filed March 4, 1927 F/Zii- Patented Aug. 20, 1929.
UNITED STATES ROSEMAN JOSEPH MONETTE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SMOKING PIPE.
Application filed March 4, 1927.
The present invent-ion relates to smoking pipes, and aims to provide a novel and improved pipe which may be conveniently folded to be carried or stored within small space.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a smoking pipe having a stem com posed of hingedly connected sections and novel means or cooperating portions between them to prevent leakage.
Another object is the provision of a smoking pipe of the kind indicated comprising a novel assembly and construction of the component elements whereby the pipe is practical and efficient for intended purposes.
lVit-h the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pipe.
F ig. 2 is a side elevation of a case or box containing the folded pipe.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section through the joint of the pipe stem.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the adjacent ends of the pipe stem sections when folded.
The stem of the pipe which has the bowl 7 at one end and the usual smoke passage therethrough, is composed of the section 8 integral with the bowl 7 as shown, and the mouth piece section 9, which may be of any suitable material. Joint members or collars 10 and 11 of metal or other suitable material abut the adjacent ends of the respective stem sections 8 and 9, and have the reduced portions or extensions 12 and 13 fitted within counterbores in the adjacent end portions of the respective sections 8 and 9. The extension or nipple 12 is shorter than the corresponding counterbore, to provide a cavity or trap for catching nicotine, and by removing the member 10 from the section 8, the nicotine may be cleaned from the counter-bore. The end of the extension or nipple 12 is preferably cone shaped to permit same to readily enter the counterbore. The members 10 and 11 are hingedly connected, as at 14, with the hinge axis arranged transversely at the bottom of the stem, whereby the section 9 may be swung downwardly and forwardly to a position below the section 8 and bowl 7,
Serial No. 172,679.
as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 2. This provides for the compact folding of the pipe for conveniently carrying the pipe in the pocket, and the pipe, when folded, may be carried within a case or box 27, as seen in Fig. 2. The pipe, when folded, may be carried in the vest pocket, and may be carried with the bowl upright so that the bowl need not be emptied when placing the folded pipe in the pocket, such as when boarding a train or entering any other place Where smoking is not permitted, the pipe being readily unfolded and the smokin resumed.
In order to hole the sections 8 and 9 in alinement, a sheet metal washer 15 is clamped between the section 9 and member 11. and has a leaf spring 16 projecting therefrom across the member 11 and adapted to overlap the member 10, said members having flattened sides to accommodate said spring. The member 10 carries a pin 17 to enter an aperture 18 in the leaf spring 16, when the sections 8 and 9 are swung into alinement, thereby latching the sections together in alinement. The spring 16 is located at the top of the stem, while the hinge 14 is at the bottom. By lifting the forward free end of the spring 16, to remove the spring from the pin 17, the stem ma; be readily folded. When the stem is unfo ded the spring 16 passing over the pin 17 will snap into engagement with said pin.
The confronting faces of the members 10 and 11 are formed to fit one another and also have packing means to prevent leakage. Thus, the member 10 has on its face the annular flange 19 to receive an annular flange 20 outstanding from the face of the member 10, and the member 11 has a central recess 21 receiving a central nipple 22 projecting from the member 10. The member 11 has an annular portion 24 between the flange 19 and recess 21 to enter an annular recess 23 with which the member 10 is provided between the flange 20 and nipple 22, and cork or other packing 25 is disposed in the recess 23 for the contact of the portion 24 to provide a smoke and air tight joint.
The face of the portion 24 is formedwith annular grooves and ribs, as at 26, so that the packing 25 being compressed between the portion 24-and bottom of the recess 23, leakage will be effectively prevented.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl section, a mouthpiece section, and a pair of hingedly connected members between said sections, said sections having counterbores in their adjacent ends and said members hav- .6 ing reduced portions fitted in said counterbores.
2. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl section, a mouthpiece section, a pair of hingedly connected members between said sections,
1 said sections having counter-bores in their adjacent ends and said members having reduced portions fitted 1n said counterbores,
and a leaf spring bearing against one of said members and adapted to overlap the other member, said leaf spring having a washer between the first named member and the corresponding section and surrounding the corresponding reduced portion, the secondnamed member having a portion for the engagement of the leaf spring to hold said members together.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
ROSEMAN J. MONETTE.
