Description

GARTER SHIELD Filed Dec. 5, 1927 INVENTOR 4 7765 fl///7 I Mr I ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 13, 1929 re rise time JAMES D. ALLEN, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
GARTER SHIELD.
Application filed December My invention relates to garters and more particularly to shields for garters or like dress accessories, the principal object of the invention being to shield garter from soiling while being worn, A further objectis to provide a removable and renewable shield for a garter.
In accomplishing this and other-objects of the invention I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a garter in functioning position adapted for and equipped with a shield constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detailperspective view of the shield.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an elastic garter in relaxed position, illustrating the application of the shield thereto.
Fig. 4 is a similar view from the reverse side of the shield.
Referring in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a garter comprising an elastic strip 2 having a hook 3 and a loop 4 on op posite ends whereby the elastic strip may be secured in functioning position embracing a member; and non-elastic clip-supporting and strengthening fabric patches 5 and 6 provided for the support of depending hose clips 7 A mans garter has been described of ordinary construction, for illustrating the class of articles to which a shield 8, now to be described, may be applied, the garter being adapted, as will be mentioned, to support it.
The shield comprises a body portion 9 preferably of relatively light, cool and inexpensive woven fabric adapted to absorb perspiration, and having a width substantially equal to the transverse dimension of the garter with which it is to be associated and preferably slightly wider-than the garter and being substantially larger than the elastic strip when extended in use. The body member 9 is preferably provided with suitable hem or edging 10 to protect it from ravelling; and buttons 11 and 12 are attached by relatively long bunches of thread 13, all the buttons on the same side, the outer side, of the body member, the buttons being positioned for alignment with fastening means in the pad members 5 and 6 and with 5, 1927.- Serial No. 237,766.
of the garter is provided with an elongated slot or extended buttonhole 16 produced longitudinally in the elastic element and in spaced relationwith the adjacent clip-supporting member 5 in the ordinary garter for a mans use. The clip-supporting members 5 and 6 are relatively close together and adacent one end of the elastic element, and the thread-made button-attaching bonds are slid-able in the buttonholes let and 15 when the'buttons are engaged therein. The buttonhole 16in the elastic element, provides a longer path for the similar adjust-able slid ing of the button 11 therealong.
The shield is attached to a garter by inserting the buttons in the suitable buttonholes and on the inside surface of the garter. When the garter is placed in position on the leg of the wearer, the shield is arranged with its ends overlapping and the elastic element of the garter is then extended in registry with the shield and thereoverfor engaging the hook with the loop-for support of the garter and the hose. The buttonbonds sliding in the buttonholes permit portions of the elastic element to pass along the surface of the shield to position and the shield is therefore supported by the garter by means which permit the extension of the elastic element longitudinally of the shield.
In use, shields will be provided in such number as may be desired by the user and each of a lot of the shields will be provided with buttons disposed with reference to the normal position of garter elements, the shield body being provided of width and length suit-able to a particular type of garter if desired.
' The garters to which the shield. is to be applied are adapted to receive the shield by the production therein of the button holes in the suitable positions. The shield being thus removably attached to the garter is easily positioned when the garter is put on and without discomfort to the wearer protects the garter from the perspiration and other elements tending to soil the garter and provides a comfortable as well as a removable inside l1n1ng for the garter.
The shield may be renewed at pleasure,
the assumption being that a fresh shield will be installed on the garter on each occasion of wear of the garter, the used shields being cleansed for reuse.
The means of attaching the shield to a garter may be adapted to particular types of garters, some of which, for example, may lack the reenforcing clip-supporting members, or may comprise an elastic band, in which case all the buttonholes Will occur in the elastic element only. The means for slidably supporting the shield may comprise loops of the shield or slits therein through which the elastic element of the garter may be extended.
While the protection of a garter that is renewed with relative infrequency 1s described, the devise may be employed for the purpose of protecting the surface which the article contacts from adverse effects thereof, the skin of the wearer, or fabric of a supported accessory, and the material and nature of the shield may be adapted to such purpose. 5
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a garter, a garter shield comprising a fabric strip for mounting inside a garter, and longitudinally spaced slidable means for supporting the strip on the garter for slidable extension of the garter along the strip.
2. In combination with an elastic garter, a strip substantially longer than the garter provided with spaced buttons, the garter being provided with elongated buttonholes to receive the buttons whereby the elastic garter may be extended longitudinally of the shield.
3. A garter or the like comprising an elastic member having elongated apertures and a strip adapted to lie against the member of the wearer and provided with buttons for insertion in the apertures for removable support of the strip by the elastic member, and adapted for stretching of the elastic member in registry with the strip.
4. In combination with a garter, a shield adapted to extend along the inner face of the garter, and longitudinally spaced coopcrating means on the garter and shield slidably engaging the shield with the garter.
5. 'In a garter including an elastic member and an inelastic member, a shield adapted for mounting on one side of the garter, and supporting means on the shield, said elastic and inelastic members being respectively provided With means engageable with said supporting means for supporting the shield from the garter to permit extension of the elastic member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JAMES D. ALLEN.
