Description
M. HELLWIG & H. EKE.
BRUSH.
Patented Jan.-18, 1876.
N4 PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. Ov C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MAURICE HELLWIG AND HELMUTH EKE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [72,432, dated January 18,, 1 7 app filed September 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, M. HELLWIG and H. EKE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Feeding Brushes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference hein g had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of our invention relates to a new and useful improvement in self-feeding brushes, wherein the flow of the water or coloring matter through the hair is regulated by the insertion of a filter or any porous material, inclosed by a ferrule, into the center of the brush,in connection with a screw-valve, to exclude or admit air at will, the admission of air by the loosening of the valve causing a moderate flow of the fluid, while the tightening of the same will stop the flow.
In order to, enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use thersame, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side view of a copyingbrush embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is'a transverse vertical section of the same. Fig. 3is a side view of the ferrule and filter.
A represents the brush-holder or case, made of sheet metal or other material, and of sufficient capacity to contain a suitable supply of water or coloring matter. 0 is a ferrule, of
metal or other material, inclosing the filter D, and is inserted in the hairs B. The upper end of the ferrule is provided with a circumferential flange, to close or contract the throat of the'case A when it is inserted therein from the lower end, as shown. It is then fastened with rosin, or any other adhesive substance, into the brush-holder A, and then pressed at X. The filter D prevents the closing of the ferrule C, which it otherwise would suffer by the pressure. The top or bridge of the case A is represented by V, soldered upon the upper edges of the face-plates, leaving an opening, 0, in the center to allow the passage of the fluid. E is the brush-handle, soldered over the bridge and face-plates, and terminating with a screw-valve, F, which is used to introduce the water or coloring matter, and to admit or exclude the air. G is a ring by which to hang the brush when not in use.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l The within-described self-feeding brush, constructed with hollow handle E, reservoir A, filter D, and ferrule O, inclosing the filter, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. r
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
MAURICE HELLWIG. [L. HELMUTH EKE. [L. 8.]
