Description

Aug. 16, 1929. e. H. GILLIGAN SPINNTNG OR TW'ISTING RING Filed June 16, 1928 ,Z77We777l 6?- 6 wa /7a arwgy Patented Aug. 6, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE I-I. G'ILLIG-AN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNCR TO U. S. RING TRAVELER COMPANY, OF PROVIDENCE; RHODE ISLAND, A CC RPOR-AIION F RHODE ISLAND.
SPINNING 0R TVYIETING RING.
Application filed June 18,
My invention relates to rings for spinning and twisting frames, and particularly to rings ot' the type purposed to carry horizoutal. rather than 'ertical travelers; that is to say, rings flanged at their tops to present a general I or T shap in transverse section.
The essential. objects of my invention are to lubricate both the web and the lhuige or Hinges of the ring; to prevent both excoriation of the web, and wear or friction oil the horns oi the traveler; and to effect these ends in. such a manner as to avoid any obseruction to the horns of the traveler in its MOW? went over the ring.
To the above ends essentially my inveiiin such parts, and in such comlion COHSiQLS binatious of parts, as fall within the scope of the .ppended claims.
In the accompau drawings which form. a part of this spec tion,
l gure l a plan view of a r for spinniitig' and twisting frames embed my V-'1'i0ll together with a traveler oi the ontal type mounted thereon,
:iu=e 2, a section 0f ring),- taken on line of I ire 1, and
' similar section of a inodilicd Iuce numerals indicate like parts throughout the views.
As herein shown the wel.) portion 5 of my ring provided new its lower end with an external annulz-ir sl er 6 to form an abutine t for the ring); rail, but this ehouhiler may be mnitted if desired, and th hape oi the vertical web in cross section inunalerial. The web is integral at its top with the n line of the flange 7. This flange comp es fiat central portion 8, and flat laterally extendii'ig; of wing, portions 9 all in the same horizontal plane. Interior, annular, transversely swelled or curved shoulders 11 form traveler bearings.
In. the top of the central portion 8 of the flange is an annular channel. 13, of truucoconical cross section in this instance, from the bottom portion of which at intervals we tend downwardly inclined passages 14:, each terminating at the junction of the web with a shoulder 11. The passa 'es are directed successively to opposite sides of the web.
1928. semi No. 28mm.
The traveler 18 for which this ring; is purposed is of the horizontal or how typo comprising); the arched or sen!icyliudrical. body 19 and flat horizontal. horns 20. The portion 19 does not in o g icration contact with the flange, but the bearing is substantially, on the horns 20, upon the shoulders 11, and incidentally upon the web 5.
In Figure 3 is shown a ring of the same characti-n' as that in Figures 1 and 2, but of the reversible type. In. this alternative embodiment of my invention the second flange 22 is identical with the flange 7, and is provided with the channel 13 andpassages 14c already described.
In employing my ring; a liquid lubricant, either independently or in a saturated material, is placed in the channel 13 and exudes through the passages 14. The location of the d barge era .5 of the pa s such that l .e emergiu liquid not onl lubricates the vertical fa oi the web which e2- p used by the extremities of the traveler horns 20; but; also flows dmvnwardlyf and out vardly over the shoulders 11, thus luljiricating the latter and preventing l lotion and wear upon the coi'itacting l; 11g surfaces of the horns. i
The direction (at the lubrieating passages to both sides of the ring protects the b from exc tri ional coutaet rcgaiu ess of which horn is engaged therewith. The shoulde s 11 fi'lrlher eliminates .t'r ion by presenting minimum. contacting areas to the horns. A further important function of the shoulders is to keep the horn extremities remote ilinom the pa or openings 14 which would otherwise, in certain tilted positions of the traveler, catch and impede the later in its annular travel.
I clain1:-
1. In a spinning or twisting ring of the character described, a web, a flange centrally integral with the web and provided with an annular channel in its top in the vertical plane of the web, and with pas ages extending from the channel to points adjacent the web at opposite sides of the web.
2. In a spinning 0r twisting ring of the character described, a web, a flange integral with the web provided with an annular channel in its top, a transversely curved shoulder upon the bottom of the flange, said flange being also provided with a passage extending from the channel to the bottom of the flange.
In a spinning or twisting ring of the character described, a web, a horizontal fiange' centrally integral with the web provided centrally With an annular channel in its top portion and with downwardly inclined passages extending from the channel to the bottom of the flange adjacent to the web, and bearing means upon the bottom of the flange for spacing traveler horns from the passages.
4. Ina spinning or twisting ring of the character described, a web, a flat flange comprising a central portion integral with the top and laterally extending wing portions, and depending shoulders upon the wing portions extending from their ends to points adjacent the web, said central portion being provided with an annular channel, and with spaced inclined passages extending in succession from the channel to points intermediate the web and shoulders at opposite sides of the web.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
GEORGE H. GILL-IGAN.
