IMPROVED JOURNAL-BOX.
TO lALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. ATwooD, of Mansfield, in the county of Tolland, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Journal-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specication, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of ajournal-box made according to my invention, with the top or upper portici'n removed.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, taken in the line :r x of iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates more especially to that variety of journal-boxes, in which a self-acting device is employed to convey the lubricating-material to thejournal, and it consists in an annular rib or collar arranged upon the journal, near each end thereof, and so combined with a suitable cap or shield, and a chamber provided in the journalbox, as to ei'ectually secure the retention of the lubricating-material within the journal-box, thereby preventingA any waste of such material.- l
To enable others to understandthe nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents the lowerhali' or portion of thejournal-box, which is secured in any suitable manner upon a rectangular vessel, B, which constitutes the receptacle in which is placed the oil or equivalent material designed to lubricate the journal, and which has placed within it, on an axis parallel with the journal C, a carrier-wheel, D, shown in dotted outline in iig. 2, and the upper side of which, passing through a suitable slot in the portion ,A .of the journal, is in contact with the journal, shown at C, so that the wheel, being rotated by the movement of the journal, distributes to the latter the oil which adheres to its circumference as it passes through the contents of the receptacle B, thereby lubricatingthe journal. The upper halt` or portion of the journal-box is represented at A*, and is bolted upon lthe lower portion A, as indicated at a. Provided at either end of the journal are annular ribs or collars B*, which may be grooved circumferentially, as shown in fig. 1. .In order to provide for the reception of these collars, the adjacent or end-parts of both the upper and lower portions of the journal-box are hollowed out to form chambers, 0*. Each of these chambers communicates with the oilreceptacle underneath, by a hole, a', and placed within it are caps or shields D*, the ends, b, of which, resting in the lateral portions of the chambers 0*, extend down past the joint b between the two portions of the journalbox. When the oil or lubricatingmaterial, spreading upon the journal, reaches the ribs or collars B*, it spreads over or upon the same, but inasmuch as each 'of the collars `is of greater diameter than the journal, the greater velocity of the circumference thereof` causes the oil to be thrown oii therefrom by centrifugal force, thereby preventing it from passing farther toward the end of the journal and out atlthe end of the journal-box, the oil or material being furthermore prevented from being thrown through the joint or interstice b' between the two parts of the journal-box by the endportions of the caps or shields, which are extended downward past the same, as hereinbefore fully explained.
Provided in the upper side ofthe lower portion A of the journal-box, one at4 each side ofthe bearing which receives the journal, and parallel therewith, are two channels, c, the ends of which communicate with the cham-` bers 0*. in such manner that any lubricating-material that may ooze or pass laterally from the journal will be intercepted by the channels, and conducted through the chambers C* and holes a to the receptacle B.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to4 secure by Letters Patent, is
The annular` ribs or collars B*, near each end of the journal, in combination with the caps or shields D* and the chambers 0*, provided in the journalebox, all arranged substantially as herein setforth, for the purpose specified.
