Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
GEORGE H. NOBLE, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEPS FOR SPINDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 72,53] dated December 24, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. NOBLE, of Lowell, county' of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spindle-Steps used on Cotton, Woolen, or Flax Machinery.
The nature of my invention consists in providin g a case with a capped step, which, when inserted in its seat, forms an oil ask or chamber for the reception ot' oil to lubricate the bearing of the spindle.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure l represents a plan ot' the case with my improved spindle-step inserted. Fig. 2
, represents a section through A and B. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of' my improved and sufficient supply of oil is indispensable.
It' this is neglected, and the step fails to be lubricated, the friction causes heat, and the step is almost instantly worn out. Hence arises the necessity of a receptacle or chamber for oil, with suitable ducts or holes leading from the chamber to the spindle, and when filled with oil, the cap prevents dirt or any 'particle of matter from foulingI or making the oil impure and unserviceable. In my improvement these serious objections are avoided and entirely remedied.
I construct the case a with a bearing, Z, and hole m, the hole m for the purpose of inserting a proper instrument to remove the spindlestep k When required for cleaning or changing for a new one. The step k being finished with a bearing, b, for the reception ofthe spindle, the
cap j is formed to t the hole in the top of the case a by reducing the step 7c in size below.
the cap j, to lit the bearing l. The holes e and i, for the reception and distribution of oil, are then made. The step k is then placed in the case a, down on and in the socket l, which brings the cap j below the top of the case sufficient to conduct the oil from the can, through the holes @'17, into the oil chamber or flask c, formed below.
Thus it will be seen the cap j is for a double purpose-protects the chamber from dirt, and
also firmly holds the top of the step k, caussubstantially as and for the purpose hereinl specified.
