ALBERT H. yGILMAN, OF `HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS. Leiters .Patent No. 7 2,285, dated December l'i', 1867.
vIlldlllOll-IMENEI IN LUBRIGATING SPINDLES.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COMEL Be it known that liv-.ALBERI H. G-ILMAN, of Hop'eda-le, inthe county .of Worcester, and State of Massachu- Betts, have made a new and useful Invention having Reference to Machinery for Spinning Roving; and do hereby i declare the'same to be fully described iu the following specification, and represented in the accompanying draw- Figurel is a side elevation, and v Figure 2 a vertical section cfa spindlefbolster andbobbin-rotator or gear, containing my invention.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section of the bolster. l I v In such drawings, A denotes a spindlerextending through a bolsterB, and provided with a bevel-gear, C, for e'ecting rotary motion'oi sfuch spindle.` .A brassbushing or tube, D, goes through the bols'tennnd projects both above and below it, in'manner-asrepresented in fig. 2. A small screw, a, is cnt on thevlou'er part of the lsaid bushing for the purposeofreceiving an annular nut, E, which is constructed with a female screw, b, to fit the screw a. The said nut encompasses the` spindle, and Ais formed with an annular chamber, c, arranged so as to encircle the spindle and open against it. Within such chamber is a studing, d, of felt, woollen, cloth, or other suitable absorbent, the Purpose of vwhich is to catch and retain oil which may run down the Spindle, and to reapply such oil to the spindle during its vertical and rotary motions relatively 4to the bolster. lIhe bolster I form with a lateral chamber, e, which should open into or communicate with the spindle 'by a slot,f, formed vertically through the bushing. i This chamber I prefer to .make in an extension, g, ofthe bolster. The cham ber is open at top, andis to contain a stuing or tube, h, of-fclt or other proper absorbent material, which is to extend from the chamber e. through the slotf, and against the spindle. By pouring oilinto the mouth of the chamber e, and saturating the absorbent material contained therein, we shall have a means of effectually lubrieating the spindle, the surplus oil being caught bythe stung of the chamber c. The bobbin-rotator orgear is shownl at F as encompassing-the upper parts of the bushing and resting on the top ofthe bolster. .An-annular chamber, t', is formed in and around the bore or eye of the said bolster, and there is a hole or passage, t,V leading upward from such chamber to the top, of the rotator. Withinthe said chamber is a stuffing or annulus,
l, of felt or other suitable absorbent material, which is designed to holdoil when poured upon it through the passage c, the object being to lubricate that part of the b'ushing'on which the bobbin-gear is placed.
From the above, it will Vbe 4seen that we have a ready meansof lubricating those surfaces ofgthc bushing l against which the spindle and the bobbin-gear vor rotator may revolve.
By making thechamber e open at top, itwill catch the surplus oil that may escape from the bearing of thel gear F, or the upper part ofthe bushing, and will lead such oil againstthe spindle.
I claim the combination of the chamber-ed nut E, provided with an absorbent material, as set forth, with the bolster, or with the same andthe bushing, to extend down from such bolster, as explained. e
I also claim the combination of the chambered nut E, provided with an absorbent, as -set forth, with the bolster and its chamber e, furnished with an absorbent material, arranged so as to lie against the spindle, as `speciied. i
Ialso claim the combination of tbechambered nut E, the chambered bolster and bushing, provided with a, passage and an 'absorbent material .to extend-through'such passage and against the spindle, as described.
I also claim the combination of the lubricating-chamber z' and its supply-passage 7c with the gear F, the bearing thereof, and the conduit e,'or its equivalent, arranged in the bolster and to open against the spindle, as
i specified.
