Description

G. H. GILLIGAN RING TRAVELER Sept. l 7, l 92 9.
Filed March 21, 1929 Patented Slept. 17, 1929 UNITED STATES GEORGE H. GILLIGAN, E PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR yTo VU. "s. RINGI TRAVELER COMPANY, or. PROVIDENCE,` `RHODE IrsLANn, ,A coRroitlulroivy or- RHODE ISLAND RING TRAVELEn."f,
Application filed March 21, 19:29." 4seriai,1u5f34g345-f"` My invention relates toring travelers for spinning and twisting machinery.
It is necessary for practical use that a ring traveler have such a degree of elasticity or resiliency as to permit ample distention of the material of the traveler causes quick destruction by speedy and excessive wear.
yIt has been attempted to overcome the indicated disadvantages by forming the' traveler from a length of material arcuate in cross section, that is to say, from a length having a rounded inner face and a flatouter face. rThis form was found impractical, however, because of the excessive amount of metal present in the rounded portion, and 'furthermore because it made bending the stock into final form difficult, and massed the material in an intermediate portion of the traveler whore its presence still further increased 'the lack of flexibility.
The objects of myy invention are to overcome the disadvantages above adverted to, as well as the usual. purposes of preventing air resistance to the movement of the traveler, and wear or cutting of the yarn in its movement through the traveler'.
My invention consists in forming` the traif'eler with plane parallel inner and outer 4o faces and inclined, sloping, or beveled lateral faces.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification .Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ring traveler of the horizontal type used on spinning machinery and embodying my invention,
Figure 2, a similar' view of the metal blank from which the traveler shown in Figure 1 was formed,
Figure 3,"faftransv`erse section* of `the traveler taken on line 3 3 of Figure 1 Figure 4, a side elevation of a` ring'v traveler of the vertical"type used on twisting or doublino" machinery embodying my invention, an
Figure 5, a section taken online 5-,5 of Figure 4. f f
Lilie characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views. f 6o In carrying out my invention I utilize a; straight strip or oblongbar of relatively soft metal, indicated in a general way by 8, and shown in Figure 2. In detail this comf prises outer and inner broad plane parallel vv faces 9 and 10, the former of greater width than the latter. The sides or edves ofthe strip are yparallel inclined, beveled, or slop? ing surfaces 11. r
In forming a horizontalr traveler l2 kthe strip is by suitable tools bent into the form f shown in Figure 1 which comprises the arch `or body portion 13 and the horns ory ring engagingy ends 14. The broader plane face 9 of the strip 8 constitutes the outer surface of 75k the traveler. The traveler is completed by tempering.
In forming a vertical traveler 16 the strip f 8 is bentinto the form shown in Figure 4 with the broader face 9 ofthe strip 8 uponr the outer surface of the structure. Herein 17 represents the arch or intermediate portion, and 18 thering engaging ends. This traveler is tempered as usual after bending. Iny both forms of travelers it will be observed that the plane character of both the inner and outer faces not only facilitatesthe bending Iof the material at the junction of the body and ring engaging ends and elsewhere, but that the parallel 'relation of the plane faces 9 `and 10 produces a uniformity of thickness throughout the structure that perj, mitsy facile, thorough, and uniform temperi ing. i
It will be notedy also that rthe beveled or inclined shape ofthe lateral edges throughout the traveler structures yaffords a faciley andnon-abrasive bearing for the passage' of the yarn thereover, and presents a minimum 109` of resistance to the air during the movement of the traveler.
I claim l. A ring traveler having parallel inner and outer faces, the width of the traveler noreasing from each edge ofthe inner face toward the corresponding edge ofthe outer face.
2.` AA ring@travelerv having parallel innerl and outer` faces; eaeh` of'V uniformi Width:
throughout, the Width of the outer face being greater than that of the inner face,I the"- traveler having an inclined portion extending from each edge of the inner facetoward the corresponding edge of the outer ace.
In ,testimony Whereofl have axedniy signature.' A v a GEORGE GILLIGAN.
