PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN POUNTNEY UDAL, 0F BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
DISPLAY 0R ADVERTISING DEVICE..
Application filed October 27, 1927, Serial N'o. 229,184, and in Great Britain November 2, 1926.
rl`his invention has for its object to provide an improved display or advertising device adapted tor use in shop windows, on the eX- terior ot' buildings, or in any other desired position.
Referring to the three accompanying sheets of explanatory drawings Figure l is an elevation with parts broken away showingl in the upper half the front, and in the lower halt' the interior, one eX- ample of advertising devices constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 a haltl sectional plan and Figure 3 is a cross section of the device.
.li l is a trent elevation ot the complete device.
Figure 5 is a front elevation with the lower halt partially broken away.
Figure 6 is a cross section and Figure 7 a halt sectional plan showing an alternative advertising device constructed in accordance with this invention.
lVithin the case a ot the device are mounted a pair ot horizontal bars b on which are slidably mounted a number ot' cross pieces c to the Afront ot which are secured tablets d bearing the matter to be displayed. Five tablets are shown and the centre one may be fixed, the others being movable so that adjacent ones can be caused to overlap or to be extended. The two .end cross pieces are connected by a .horizontal bar e, and the intermediate ones by a like bar On each pair oit bars e, are secured a pair of abutments y, la., respectively carrying rollers i,
The rollers a' of the abutment g are acted on by opposite portions of. a cam r, whilst the rollers of the abutments L are acted on by the opposite portions of a cam Z of different size. Both cams are secured to a spindle m which is rotated through a wheel fa and pinion o from a shaft p. The latter may be driven by a pulley Q 0r by any other suitable means.
lt will be apparent that while the left hand tablets are in extended order, the right hand tablets overlap. Consequently the whole of the amiouncement conveyed by the tablets is not in view at any instant. The whole ot the announcement is only seen by following the movements ot' the tablets from left to right, and during this movement, whilst the lett hand tablets are moving the one behind the other, the right hand tablets are becoming extended as indicated in Fig. 4.
ln the alternative or modified construction shown in Figures 5 to 7, there is mounted inthe frame a a pair of guide bars b on which can slide a pair of cross bars c which are connected together by tie bars e. Each cross bar is litted with an abutment roller e' which co-operates with a single cam la. The latter is mounted on a spindle m driven by a gear wheel n, a pinion 0, and spindle p trom a pulley g. To the front of vthe cross bar c is secured a single tablet al on which rows of printed or other matter may be depicted. This tabletl lies behind ot and is .moved relatively to a plurality ot' Xed cross bars r on the front of the trame, which cross bars r may also have printed orother matter depicted thereon. The arrangement is such that during the reciprocation ot' the tablet al relatively to the cross bars r the matter to be displayed is moved progressively into and out ot the proper position. Thus the verbal announcement may be brought into view progressively or may appear as a whole tor only a short interval of time, or the combinan tion of parts d and r may display a picture which is broken up at certain intervals and appears complete at other intervals.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A display or advertising apparatus comprising a fixed trame, fixed and slidable tablets within the frame, bars carrying the slidable tablet or tablets, a pair of parallel guide rods on which. the said bars can slide, cam mechanism situated between the said bars, and means for rotating the cam mechanism, substantially as described.
2. A display or advertising apparatus comprising a fixed traine, fixed and slidable tablets within the frame, bars carrying the slidable tablets, a pair of parallel. guide rods on which the said bars can slide, cam mechanism situated between the said bars, means tor rotating the cam mechanism, and means for rigidly connecting the slidable tablets in pairs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
