UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W I LLIAM WESTERFIELD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN STREET-SPRINKLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,224, dated January 11, 1876; application filed December 11, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WESTER- FIELD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Street-Sprinkler, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a simple construc tion of the sprinkler. whereby the valves are located close to the perforated sprinkling-pipe, so that the flow of the water can be stopped and started more directly than in the sprinklers as heretofore arranged; and the arrangement is such-that access to the valves for cleaning, repairing, and adjusting them is had more readily and with less trouble than as heretofore arranged.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved sprinkler. Fig.2 is a plan of the same inverted, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the valve-connection and a portion of the tube.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the sprinkling-tube, which I propose to suspend from the frame by rods or hangers O of any approved arrangement. 1) is the water-pipe for conducting the water from the tank E to the sprinkler. It branches at F, and in each branch is a flexible and detachable joint, G, to allow of adjusting the sprinkler more readily than it could be with rigid pipes; also to lessen the injury by shocks and jars, and also to allowof detaching the sprinkler and attaching it readily. The damage by the jarring of the machine is less by this arrangement, because the transmission from the sprinkler to the tank, and vice versa, is interrupted by it. J is a valve-box at the junction of each branch K with the sprinkler,
in which is a valve, M, closing directly on the sprinkler, and so arranged that itis connected directly with the rod L for opening and closing it by the foot-lever N at the drivers seat, said rod being connected to the foot-lever by the bell-crank O and rod P, thus making a simple and cheap arrangement. The head Q of the valve-box will, in practice, have a studing-box for the rod, and will be screwed on or otherwise detachably connected.
.It is important to have the valves in these sprinkling-machines located as close to the sprinkling tubes as possible, in order that the flow of water can be directly stopped and let on again at cross-walks and the like, and it is also, highly important to have them located outside of the tank, so that access may be had to them Without getting inside, which is difficult and dangerous, the danger being in consequence of having to use a light, which sometimes ignites the varnish with which the inside is generally coated.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The suspended sprinkler tube A and hanger G, in combination with a pipe, D, having a flexible and detachable joint, G, in each branch, as and for the purpose described.
-2. The combination, with branched pipe D, of the valve-box J, valve M, and treadle mechanism L O P N, as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM WESTERFIELD.
