To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELIAS STILLWELL, of Rockville, in the county of Bates and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Bed-Bottom and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specificatiomin which- 1 Figure l is a vertical transverse section; Fig. 2, a side elevation.

The object of this invention is to provide a cheap, comfortable, and elastic bed-bottom without the use of slats or springs, asordinarily employed and it consists in two inside detachable rails, over which a stretcher of canvas is placed. The said rails are kept apart by notched bars, and have arms which rest upon a snbjacent support, and when pressed down from the weight of the occupant tighten the canvas. In combination with said rails are placed one or more bolts on each side, which pass through the bedstead-rails, and also the detachable rails, to prevent the accidental displacement of the latter.

In the drawing, A represents a bedsteadframe of the ordinary construction, having side rails B. O (J are inside detachable rails, around which are fastened the sides of the canvas cover D, which forms the stretcher. E are bars, two or more in number, placed between the rails O, for the'purpose of keeping the same apart ,and stretching the canvas. Said bars have notched ends, which fit theinside of the rails, and as the latter may require ranged as to hold the rails different distances apart.

F are arms attached to the inside of rails O,

and resting at their extremities a uponthe subjacent supports G, so that the weight of the occupant, by hearing down the bed-bottom, is made,to press up the arms, which, by giving to the rails a slight turn, tightens the canvas. H are bolts, which pass through the outside rails B of the bedstead, and also through the detachable rails O, for the purpose of holding the said rails O in proper position, and preventing the same from being accidentally displaced. The bolt-hole in the outside rail is made elongated instead ot' round, so that the bolt may not hold the rail 0 too rigid, and thus interfere with the working of the arms F.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new isl. The combination, with a suitable support, of the rails 0, having arms F, and the cover D, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination of the bolts H with the rails 0, having arms F, and the outside rail B, having an elongated bolt-hole, substantially as described.
