Description

July 23, 1929. A. J. CORMIER l`72L805 COMBINED WELL COVER AND TROUGH Filed oct. ze, 1,928` I INVENTOR /ex e/'orm/'en Patented July 23, 1929.,
narran srarssf ALEXANDER J. CORMIER, or "rYrnnTowN, MISSISSIPPI.
COMBINED WELL COVER man.frItciircn.l
Application sied octoberes, 192e. semaine. 315,257.
This invention is a device to be placed over the top ot bored well curbing for the purpose et keeping objects from falling into the well or being thrown into the same, and also for the purpose of keeping the well mouth and its surroundings dry and sanitary.
Further, it is an object to provide a combined well cover and trough in which that portion which serves as the mounting means for the trough proper also functions as a cap with cover for the well mouth.
Further, it is an object to provide the troughr proper with a covered or guarded remote end, such end having an outlet in the bottom for the discharge of the water, the cover, however, terminating short of the well bucket to be lowered into the trough.
Again, it is an object of the invention to provide the trough with means to effect an automatic opening of the outlet valve ot the bucket upon its being set into the trough thereby to release the water into the trough Another object is to provide a supporting cap with a hinged cover, the flange of which is adapted to rest on the upper edges of the sides of the trough proper whereby to hold the cover out ot' contact but close to the upper edge of the cap so as to provide for air circulation beneath the cap, if desired.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described in the following detailed de scription, then be partially pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a well top with my invention applied, the lid being open.
Figure 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section, the lid being closed and a well bucket being indicated in the trough in dotted lines.
In the drawing, in which like numerals indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 repre sents the well curbing over the top ot which the supporting cap 2 of my apparatus lits. The cap 2 has an inwardlv projecting flange 3 to which is hinged the cover 4 the front flange 5 of which is adapted to rest on the upper edges of the sides 9 of the trough proper when the cap is down while the side anges 6 of the cover embrace the adjacent sides of the cap 2.
The trough proper consists of. a bottom and sides 9 the latter extending partly across the sides of the cap 2 and being rivetedor otherwise secured tothe cap. The bottom 'lf is bent up at 8 and lits on the inside ot the cap between it and the well curbing 1, the up wardly bent portion 8 being riveted or other; wise secured to the cap, as maybe desired.
lt is to be noted that the upper edges of the sides 9 adjacent the cap. 2 are located below the upper plane of the cap, lthe purpose Jfor this will be clear later.
The trough proper has an outlet s lot 10 in its bottom wall adjacent that end which is re-. mote from thewell, the portion cut from the bottom 7 to make the opening 10, being downkwardly bent to 'form a pouring lip 11.
ln order to keep the water romsplashing out and over on the 'ground below so as to avoidV wetting the Vground around the `well theremote end of the trough proper is enclosed by a cover 12 which extends over theJ front and a portion ofv the top of the trough proper, the cover 12 having side anges 13 riveted or otherwise 'securedto the sides Si. It also has an abutment flange 14;' projecting beneath theforwa rd edge of the bottom 7 and being riveted or otherwise secured thereto as may be desired, l 15 areibraces which are pivoted at 16 to the trough proper and at their other ends are suitably secured to the well curbing 1. f
Within the trough proper is a member 17 which is secured to the bottom 7 in any suitable way in alignment with the space between the cover 12 and the cap 2. It is into this space that the bucket of water from the well is set. These buckets are usually provided with valves in their bottom andlwhen thebucket is set over the member 17 that member engages the valve to push it open thus effecting an automatic discharge of the water from apparent to those skilled in the art to which it relates. v
What I claim is:
1. `A device of the character described comprising a tubular supporting capto fit over the upper' end of a well curbing, a trough proper carried by said cap, said trough proper comprising a body having a discharge opening in its bottom wall adjacent the end remote from the cap, and a cover over said remote end.
2. A device of the character described comprising a tubular supporting cap to fit over the upper end of a well curbing, a trough proper carried by said cap, said trough proper comprising` a body having a discharge opening in its bottom wall adjacent the end remote from the cap, a cover over said remote end, said cover constituting an end Wall for the trough proper and extending over the top of said trough proper, there being a space at the top of said trough proper between said cap and said cover to admit of the lowering of a well bucket into the trough.
3. A device of the character described comprising a tubular supporting cap to iit over the upper end of a well curbing, a trough proper carried by said cap, said trough proper comprising a body having a discharge opening in its bottom wall adjacent the end remote from the cap, acover over said remote end, said cover constituting an end wall for the trough proper and extending over the top of said trough proper, therebeing a space at the top of said trough proper between said cap and said cover to admit of the lowering of a well bucket into the trough, and means in said trough proper in register with said space to engage the outlet valveJ of a Well bucket located within the trough and open the same.
4. A device of the character described comprising a tubular supportingcap to iit over the upper end of a well curbing,y a trough proper carried by said cap, said trough proper comprising a body having a discharge opening in its bottom Wall adjacent the end remote from the cap, ya cover over said remote end, said cover constituting an end wall for the trough proper and extending over the top of said trough proper, there being a space at the top of said trough proper between said cap and said cover to admit of the lowering of a well bucket into the trough, means in said trough proper in register with said space to engage the outlet valve of a well bucket located within the trough and open the same, and a cover over said cap.
5. A device of the character described coinprising a tubular supporting cap to tit over the upper end of a well curbing, a trough proper carried by said cap, said trough properV comprising a body having a discharge opening in its bottom wall adjacent the end vremote from the cap, a cover over said remote end, and a flanged cover hinged to said cap, said trough proper having side walls extending from said cap and spaced below the top of said cap and said cover having one of its t flanges to rest on said side walls when the cover is down.
v6. A device of the character described comprising a tubular supporting cap to fit over the upper end ot a well curbing, a trough proper carried by said cap, said trough proper comprising a body having a discharge opening in its bottom Wall adjacent the end remote from the cap, acover over said remote end, and braces extending from said trough proper to the well curbing.
