Description

y 16, 1929- s. H. SLEEPER 1.72L
AUTOMOBILE TABLE Filed Sept. 24, 1924 Patented July 16, 1929.
SHERBURNE H. SLEEPER, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
AUTOMOBILE TABLE.
Application filed September 24, 1924. Serial No. 739,582.
My invention relates to automobile accessories of the campers outfit type, and has for its primary object the provision of a novel combination table and container, adapted to be disposed on therunning board of an automobile when in folded position, for transportation.
Other objects will be apparent from the description, and with such in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which:
Figure 1 is an illustration of the table in folded and mounted position on an automobile;
Figure 2, a perspective of the table in opened position;
Figure 3, a transverse vertical section through an intermediate portion thereof;
Figure 4, a similar section therethrough when in folded position, and
Figure 5, a fragmentary section illustrating a cover fastening.
In its preferred form the invention comprises a rectangular table formed of two halves hinged together and foldable upon themselves to form, when in folded position, a container, similar to a dress suit case. Each half, or section, consists of a flat table top panel designed respectively as 1 and'2, respectively provided with end panels 3, '3, and 4, 4. Each top panel has along its side edge adjacent the other a side panel as at 5 and .6, of the same height, and the two halves are joined together by a series of hinges .7 secured to the side panels 5 and 6, as best shown in Figure 3.
Each of the end panels 3, 3 and 4, 4, has internally disposed thereon at the corners of the table. a brass socket 8 for the reception therein of the table supporting legs9, which are attachable merely by insertion. In order to provide for effective fastening of the table in closed position as a container, hooks 10 are mounted on one pair of end panels for engagement in keepers 11 mounted on the other pair of end panels.
When the legs 9 are removed and the two halves folded on one another to closed position, the device is adaptable as a container forclothing, camp gear, or small articles. If desired, the legs 9 may beof a length sufli cient to be carried within the container, pro vidinga self contained unit. -When in fold edposition the open end of the container is closed by a cover panel 12 fitted thereover and secured in position by means of angle rons 13 attached thereto, which are engaged 1n sockets 14 formed in the adjacent top panel. Intermediateits ends and along its open side edge, one .of the top panels, as 2, is'
provided with a conventional lock 15, the
bolts of which engage in a keeper carried by the cover panel, whereby; the cover panelmay be locked 1n position to close the container. Any desired method of attaching the container to a running board may be employed; r
The leg socket members 8 are preferably stamped from metal blanks and: may be either squared or rounded, it having been found that a semi-cylindrical formation is best adapted to use, with lateral securing flanges.
ll hile I have illustrated and described certain details entering into the construction and operation of the invention, I desire it to be understood that the invention isnot limited to such, but that any desired changes and modifications of detail may be employed as will fall Within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim :-w
An automobile table comprising, two side sections of elongated rectangular formation each having end flanges and one side fi ange, means hingedly conneetingthe edges of said side flanges to form an open top container when the side sections are disposed in parallel relation, cooperating latch means internally mounted on each of said end flanges to secure sald side sections in parallel and container forming position, leg attaching means snnnennnn n.
