IMPRCVEMENT lN CARPET-STRETCHERS.'

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 72,087, dated January 11, 1876 application tiled November 9, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ORVILLE D. CARLISLE, of Buchanan, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain newr and useful Improvements on Carpet-Stretchers, of which the following is a specication:

The nature ot' my invention relates to the construction ot' a device by which a carpet can be smoothly stretched on the floor ot' the apartment to which it is to be tacked and it consists in a bar, which is to be temporarily attached to the door, on which is supported a roller, which is actuated by a lever and gear,

to roll up two straps attached toa spiked bar which engages with the carpet. `There is also provided means whereby the device carrying the roller may be rotated so as to bring the said.

roller and spiked bar parallel to the main bar, so that the device may be readily'packed for transportation.

In the drawing, A represents the main bar, to one end of which is secured the spike B, which is provided with a head, b', and the projection b', to prevent its too close contact With the` base-board.` On the bar Ais secured a journalboX,C, in-which rotates the roller D,

which is secured inthe journal by the collar d, on one side, and onthe other side by the facegear E, rigidly attached to the roller. The

face-gear engages with a spur-gear, F, which the spur-gear having secured to its upper -is attached to the journal-box C by the pivot i face a lever, G, by which it is rotated. On

the bottom ot' the journatbox are two projections, c c1, the former of which is provided with a stud, c, to which is pivoted a dog, It, which engages with teeth or ratchet of' the face-gear, and prevents the roller from unlwinding the straps. Theprojectiou c is also provided with a bolt, i, which passes through the bar A, and secures the journal-box to said bar, and permits the journal-box to rotate unwhich are attached to the bar I, which has driven diagonally through it the spikes m,

which engage with the carpet. On the upper side ofthe bar I is pivoted a button, n, which engages with bar A, and holds bar I in place. The carpet being tacked down on one side of the room, the spike B is driven into thetloor near the other edge of the carpet, the bar A extending toward the carpet. The spike-bar` I is attached to the carpet by means of the spikes it. By rotating the spur-gear -F by means ot' the lever the roller D is caused to revolve and wind'up the straps H, which necessarily draw forward the spike-bar I, and stretch the carpet, Which can then be tacked in place. rIhe dog IL, engaging with the teeth of the face-gear, prevents the rollerfrom yielding to the strain ot' the carpet.

What I claim as my invention is* 1; In a carpet-stretcher, the combination ot' the bar A, the pivot f. the journal-box C, and rollerlD, substantially as set forth. 2. In a carpet-stretcher, the combination of the bar A, journal-box C, roller D, face-gear E, spur-gear F, and lever G, substantially as descri bed.'

3. The combination of the journal-box C,

roller D, facegear E, spur gear F, lever G, straps H, and spike-bar I, substantially as described.

4. The combination of the bar A, journaly box C, roller D, face-gear E, spurgear F, lever G, straps H, and button la, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
