ADVERTISING DEVICE.
application filed April 2, 1928. Serial No. 266,701.
This invention relates to advertising devices and embodies al'nong other .cluiractcristics a revolvablc elementadapted to display different ad vertising matte at predetermined. intervals in the rotation thereof.
Another object of the invention embodies a housing for the rotatable element having asight opening therein through whichthe advertising matter may be seen.
An additional object of the invention contemplates an operating mechanism for the rotatable clement adapted to rotate the rotatable element predetermined distances to expose the different faces thereof through the sight opening.
A further object of the invention comprehends a stop mechanism adaptedto sustain the different faces of the rotatable element adjacent the sight opening.
More specifically stated, the sight opening is adapted to be illuminated when the different faces of the rotatable element are exposed.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure t is a sectional view taken on l ne 41- l of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the referencecharacter indicates a platform supported. upon legs 11. A motor 12, carried upon the upper side of the platform, is retained thereon .by a clamping band 13. Said motor is provided with a worm drive shaft adapted for meshing engagement with a worm gear 14 rotating a fixed upstanding shaft 15 carrying a spur gear 16 upon the uppermost end thereof.
A gear member 17, horizontally disposed and .rotatably mounted upon an upper end of a standard 18, upstanding from the upper surface of the platform 10, isadapted for meshing engagement with the spur gear ber 22. A reduced extension 23, dependin fronr thelower nost end of the shaft 22, is positioned within a socket opening 24; in the uppermost end of a shaft member 25 upstanding from and disposed centrally of the' platform 10. A pin member 26, extended horizontally through the socket opening 24L in the reduced extension 23 of the shaft 22 therein, is adapted to provide a fixed connection therebetween. The lowermost end of the shaft 25 being rigidly connected with the platform 10. A bearing member 27, in terposed between the connecting portions of the shafts 22 and 25 respectively, is adapted to support a hub member 28. Spokes 29, radially disposed from the hub 28, are adapted for connection with the inner faces of the rotatable element 19.
An elongated set screw 30, passed through one of the faces of the rotatable element l9, is adapted tobe horizontally disposed within the hub member 28 and which is adapted to engagethe bearing member 27 at the innermost end thereof. The opposite end of the particular set screw extends through an opening in one .of the faces of the rotatable element and is provided with a cross pin 31 located :innnediately behind said face to restrict retracting movement of .the set screw per se whereby the latter may not become displaced when the same is loosened. Such construction will prevent the hub member 28, spokes 29.and rotatable element 19 from' rising and falling from a given position.
As noted, the hub member 28 is free to rotate upon the bearing 27.
A cylindrical housing member 32, having a cone-shaped top and disposed in spaced relation to the outer faces and intersecting portions of therespective faces of the rotatable element 19, is provided with a sight opening 34 through which said faces may be exposed.
Frame members 35, carried upon the outer sides of the rotatable element 19, are adapted to retain cards, pictures or other advertising matter, such as indicated at 36, against the respective faces thereof.
A finger 37, axially mounted upon the upper side of the gear 17, is adapted for selective engagement with the bevel faces 38 upon the innermost projecting ends of L-shaped arms 39 carried upon the inner side of the rotatable element and between the intersections of the respective faces thereof.
From the illustration in Figure 3 of the drawings, it is to be noted that further rotation of the gear 17 will cause the adjacent L-shaped arm 39 to be moved in the direc tion of the arrow whereby a different face of the rotatable element will be brought into registration with the sight opening 34 in the housing 32.
Due to the fact that the hub member 28 is free to rotate upon the bearing member 27, it is desirous to have the different faces of the rotatable element stopped at many intervals to display the different advertisin matter carried upon the faces thereoI through the sight opening. To this end, I provide a sleeve member 40 upstanding from the platform 10 and within which is mounted a reciprocating pin 41 encircled by acompression spring 42 adapted to normally 'dispose the pin to occupy the position as best illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings.
11 pin 43, carried by and horizontally disposed from the uppermost end of the pin 41, is adapted for reciprocating action within a cut-out portion or portion removed, such as indicated at 44, to normally dispose the beveled face45 upon the uppermost end thereof in the position shown, the purpose of which will be presently apparent.
An arm 46, pivotally mounted for lateral swinging movement, as indicated at 47, upon the upper side of the platform 10 and toward and away fromthe sleeve member 40, is adapted for connection with a retractile spring 48 adapted to normally dispose said arm to occupy the position shown in spaced relation to the beveled end 45 of the pin 41.
The space between the end of the arm 46 and the'beveled face 45 of the pin 41 is equivalent to that of the width of any one of the L-shaped arms 39.
When any one of the L-shaped arms 39 are engaged by the finger 37 upon the gear member 17 and rotated an appreciabledis tame, the next succeeding face of the rotatable element 19 is disposed in juxtaposition immediately behind the sight opening 34 in the housing 32, simultaneously with the disposing of the next succeeding L-shaped arm 39 between the uppermost end of the arm 46 and the beveled end 45 of the pin 41, whereby the particular face of the rotatable element will be held against further rotation and the same will remain in such position long enough to permit reading of the particular card. The sight opening 34 is surrounded by a multiplicity of illuminating devices 48. connected in circuit with a switch member 49. Sprmg contact arms 50, having CODIIQCtlOl'l with the terminal wires connecting the illuminating devices 43 with the switch 49, are disposed in spaced relation to connect the illuminating devices in normally open circuit.
Contact members 51, laterally projectwl from the lowermost ends of the L-shaped arms 39 and extended through the rotatable element 19, are adapted to selectively bridge the gap between the respective spring contact fingers 50 to close the circuit between the switch and illuminating devices lb when any one of the faces of the rotatable eloment is disposed in juxtaposition (o the sight openings 34. \Vhen the gear 17 compl'etes another l'GVOll'll'lUl], the next successive L-shaped arm 39 is engaged and the particular contact member 5]. is moved away from the spring contact fingers to and the illuminating devices 43 will eonsemiently shut off during the time a new ad face is being moved into position.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is 1. An advertising device comprising a rotatable element having a multiplicity of faces, a housing for the rotatable element being provided with a sight. opening, an operating mechanism, a gear member operable by the operating mechanism, a linger carried by and eccentrically mounted upon said gear, and arms carried by the rotatable element adapted for engagement with said finger to facilitate rotation of the element and the exposition of the different faces thereof.
