S Pi A 'l' @AFE COMBINATION STRING HOLDER AND ADVERTISING' DEVICE.
Application led August 3, 1922. Serial No. 579,468.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT HOWARD Brees, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of St. Catharines, in the county of Lincoln, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Combination String Holders and Advertising Devices, of which the following is the specification. l
My invention relates to improvements in combination string holders and advertising devices and the object of the invention is to devise a string holder from which the string may be withdrawn so as to exhibit a new vadvertisement at each operation and it consists essentially of the following arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Fig. 1 is a face elevation of my string holder and advertising device.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged face sectional view through Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view through the center of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view on line 4--4, Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a further enlarged detail of the main bearing sleeve. f
Fig. 6 is a perspective detail of the pad holder employed in connection with my device.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
1 indicates the base of my machine. 2 and 3 are casing members supported upon the base, the member 3 being secured thereto by screws 4. The lower portion 3X of the base forms a housing in which the string is contained as will hereinafter appear.
The upper portion of the casing 30 is substantially circular and is connected to the portion 3X by a hollow neck 31. 5 and 6 are orifices formed in the center of the circular portion 30 of eachcasing member 2 and 3, the orifices 5 and 6 being in horizontal alignment. 7 is a study provided with reduced threaded ends 8 and 9 and extending through the orifices 5 and 6.
10 is a reduced portion located intermediately ofthe length of the stud 7, the periphery of such reduced portion being formed with ratchet teeth 11 for apurpose which will vhereinafter appear.
12 and 13 are securing nuts which are screwed onto the reduced threaded portions 8 and 9 to secure the stud 7 in a stationary position within the casing. 14 is a circular enlargement adapted to bear against the in-` ner face of the casing memberl 3, such casing member being clamped between the en'- largement 14 and the nut 13. Each casing member 2 and 3 is provided with a central internal recess 15 which is concentric with 65 the center of each orifice 5 and 6. 16.is a sleeve which is mounted upon the stud 7, such sleeve being provided, intermediately of its length, with a segmental cutaway portion 17 located opposite the reduced portion 10 of the stud 7.
The sleeve 16 is provided with reduced eX- ternally threaded ends 16x and 16. 18 and 19 are discs provided with internally threaded central orifices 18X and 19X through whichy the reduced ends 16x and 16 of the sleeve 16 pass. 2O and 21 are discs of card or other suitable material upon which suitable advertisements are inscribed for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. The disc 18 lis provided in its peripheral edge with ratchet-shape notches 22 spaced at suitable distances apart.
23 is a stud extending from the casing member 3 towards the center of the mach-ine.v 85
`24 is a dog swung u on the stud 23k and adapted to engage wit the ratchet notches l 22 being spring-pressed into engagement with such notches by the spring 25. 26 is a pin extending outward from the dog 24.
27 is a pulley member formed by a disc portion having radial slits 28 eXtending-inward from the edge thereof to form a series of tongues 29 which are bent alternately in opposite directions to form a string receiving V-shape groove 30. 31 and32-are bearing brackets secured to the base 1 within the casing formed by the members 2 and 3. 33 is' a shaft secured within the orifices 34 and 35 of the brackets 31 and 32. 36 is a sleeve mounted freely upon the shaft 33 and upon which is forced a ball of string as' invdicated at 37. j
The strand 38 of the ball 37 passes upward around the pulley 27 and outward through an orifice fo-rmed by opposing notches 39 and through an orifice 40 formed in a guidefinger 41 secured tothe casing member 311s indicated at 42. The bracket 32 is provided with an upward extension 110 ortica.
43 from which extends a horizontal finger 44 having a guide orifice 45 in proximity to the end thereof through which the strand of string 38 passes and whereby the string` is held to track with the pulley 27 The base portion 3X of the casing is provided with an extension 46 formed by vertical wall portions having inclined edges 47. 48 is a stud extending between the wall portions of the extension 46. 49 is a paci holder. Ther pad holder 49 comprises a plate 50 adapted to fit between the inclined edges 47 and a horizontal extension 51 which is broad U-shape in cross section, the arms of the U` being provided with inverted notches 521 adapted to fit over the stud 48 so as to for-,1n a'support for the pad holder. 53 are theleaves of the pad which are secured upon spicular projections 54. 55 are exhibiting orifices formed in the casing members 2 and rilhe exhibitingoriiices 55 are provided with transparent window portions 56. 57 are fingers rigidly securedv to the pulley 27 so as to project outward therefrom. rlhe outer end of each finger is provided with an inclined portion 58 adapted to engage the pin 26 when the pulley 27 is revolved.
Having described the yprincipal parts 1nvolved in my invention l will briefly rescribe the operation of the same.
vVhen it is desired to tie a parcel the stringv strand 38 is grasped at its free end f by the operator and pulled outward from the casing through the orifices 39 and 40.
By this means the pulley 27 is revolved as' the string is drawn ofl the ball 37.
As the pulley 27 is revolved the inclined end 58 of one of the finger projections 57 engages the pin 26 lifting the dog 24 out of the notch 22 with which it is in engagement. 59'is a helical spring, one end of which is secured'to the hub of the pulley 27 and the other end to the disc 18.
When the strand of string is pulled in the manner above described to rotate the pulley 27 the spring 59 is gradually tightened, the disc 18 being held from rotation by the dog 24. As the pulley 27 is turned the inclined portion 58 of the finger 57 next adjacent to the dog 24 engages the pin 26 thereby lifting the dog 24 out of' engagement with the notch 22 with which it is engaged thereby freeing the disc 18 which is then carried by the spring in tension a partial turn to exhibit the next succeeding` advertisement through the orifice 55.' The -disc 19, being mounted upon the same sleeve as the disc 18, turns in unison so as to also exhibit the next succeeding advertisement through the orifice 55 of the casing member'2.
In order to prevent the return of the pulley 27 after each outward draw upon the strand of string 38 I have provided a dog 60 pivoted upon a pin 61 carried by the pulley 27. The dog 60 coacts with the ratchet 11 sliding over the ratchet during the forward turning movement. of the pulley 27 to engage with the ratchet teeth on any tendency for the pulley 27 to make a return movement. j
rlhe casing member 3 may be provided with a socket 62 for the reception of the pencil 63 by which the addresses to which the parcels are sent may be noted upon the pad lfrom this description it will be seen that l have devised a vcry simple device adapted to hold string so that the string may be readily drawn off from the wall and which,
b f such o aeration will automaticall f onerate an advertising device so that a new advertisement is exhibited by each operation.
