H. R. ESTES ADVERTISING DEVICE Filed 001:. 20. 1924 INVENTOR \R$s\as BY haw F ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 22, 1925. I
UNITED "STATES HUBERI Ross Es'rEs, on oIIIoAGo, ILLINOIS.
' ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Application filed October 20, 1924. Serial No. 744,774.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT Ross EsTEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident 01 Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Advertising Devices, of which the f llowing is a full, clear, and exact description. a
My invention relates to improvements in advertising devices, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of invention is to provide an advertising device which has movable members that are adapted to be actuated by the wind and which may be highly colored so as to attract the attention of passersby to the advertisement carried by the device.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which makes use of an advertising medium that may have the advertising matter printed thereon, this medium being shaped so as to more clearly convey the purpose of the advertisement.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described in which the advertising medium may be secured to the device so as to remain in a stationary position, or which may be adjusted so asto be moved by one of the wind actuated members.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which is especially designed so as to be shipped in a compact bundle, and then assembled upon its arrival at the destination. Y
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which is simple in construction, durable, and efficient for the purpose intended.
Other objects and advantages'will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a side elevationof the device,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device,
Figure 3 is a section along the line 33 of Figure 2, 1
Figure 4 is a section along the line 44 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a modified form of the supporting means for-the device.
In carrying out my invention I provide a supporting base 1 which may be secured to a post 2 or the like by means of screws. The supporting member 1 has a sleeve 4 therein which adapted to receive the lower end of annpright 5. The upright 5 in the presentinstance'is in. the shape. of a rod and'is secured to the support 1 by means ofa set screw 6.
The rod is adapted to carry wind wheels indicated generallyatA and B. The wheels are constructed so as. to rotate in opposite directions so as to attract the attent1on of passersby. Since the wheels A and B are identical in construction, it will be suflicient to describe the wheel 'A. The wheel consists of an upper plate 7 and a lower plate 8, which are provided with projections 9 that have grooves 10 therein. "The projections 9 with the grooves 10 are clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4. I In the present form of the device I have shown four of the projections 9 on each of the plates 7 and 8. The vanes 11 of the wind" wheel are curved as siown in Figure 2 and are provided with wire arms 12' which are adapted to be inserted in openings 13 in the plates 7 and 8, and then be bent from the dotted line position shown in Figure 4 into the full line position shown, so as to lock the vanes in place. The plates7 and 8 are loosely mounted upon the rod 5 and the plate 7 is kept spaced from the plate 8 by means of a bend 14 in the arms 12.
Each vane consists. of a plate15 and arms 12; The arms 12 extend the entire length of the vane, and the v ends of the plate 15 are bent around the arms whereby the plate is secured to the arms. Thewire arms 12 are curved so as to give a curvature to the plate 15 as clearly shown in Figure 2. The plates ports the bushing 16. It will be seen from this construction that the wind wheels are adapted to rotate freely about therod 5. An advertising sign'18 is provided with lugs 19 that have openings 20 therein which receive the rod '5. The plate 18 is free to rotate about the rod 5; A bushing 21 is mounted upon the rod 5 and supported by means of apin 22. The pin is reinovably carried the rod and when removed, permits the sign to drop down upon the Wind Wheel B as shown by the dotted line position in Figure 1; When the sign 18 is in full line position, the pin 22 Will prevent the rotation of the sign due to the pin en gaging With the Wall of the opening 23 in the sign 18, as shown in Figure 2. When the sign, however, is in the dotted line position, it Will be supported by the Wind WheelB, and Will be carried around by the I r'otation'of the Wind Wheel.
so. as to attract attention. The vanes of the 'struction of the Wind Wheel.
From the foregoing description of the various, parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. One
of the principal'objects or advantages of the device lies in the fact that it can be packed into a small bundlefor shipment. InFigure 4 I have shown that the arms 12 may be "bent so as tosecure the arms to the plates 7 and] 8. When shipping the device, the vanes 11 are nested, andvrtherefore occupy a verysmall space. The support 1 may also be removed from the rod 5 and in like manner. the sign18fmay be removed from the rod 5. The parts when disassembled may be packed into a small space for shipment. The person When assembling the d'ev-ice inserts theends 23 of the arms 12 through the openings 13 in the plates 7 and 8. This movement causes the arms to be received in the grooves 104 The arms are 'novvbentas shown in Figure 4, thus completing the corn The projections 9' are long enough to prevent the vanes fromjsivinging With respect to the plates 7 and 8. The vanes, together With the plates 7 and 8 form a single unit which is readily rotated by means of the Wllld; The plates 15; may be colored in different bright colors Wind Wheel A are curved differently from the vanes of the Wind Wheel B, and thus the Wheels rotate in opposite directions. The
' device is especially designed tov be placed 'onfence posts; or the like along country roads,
liere'they' may bereadily viewed by eepa -se y- I l t-1 it is desired ito secure the device; to a verti'ca-lQWa-ll such as that shownby 30 in Eigure 5, --I provide an L-shaped bracket is adapted, to besecur ed to the Wall 30; by-means of screws 82; The horizontal arm33 of the bracket-is provided With a socket 84L Whieh'receives, the lower end of the rod 5. A set screw 85 securesthe rod in; place; The device is; extremely simple inoperation and provi ,des.-- anovel and efii cient means for'a-ttracting the attention'of passersby. As heretofore stated the sign 18 may be shaped so as to suggest the article Which'is being advertised.
Iclaimr 1; An advertising device comprising a "supporting rod, Wind actuated members rotatably carried by said supporting rod, an advertising medium carried by said rod, and means for preventing the rotation of said medium, said means being removably secured to said rod to permit said sign to be supported, and actuated by one of said Wind actuated members When said means is removed. 1 I V g s 2. An. advertising device comprising a supporting rod, Wind actuated members rotatably carriedby said supporting rod, an
advertising medium carried by said rod, and means for preventingtherotation of said medium, said means being removably secured to said rod to permit said sign to ind actuated members when said means is removed, said Wind actuated members being constructed so as'to rotate in opposite directions with respect to each other.
