The objects of my invention are to provide.
a device as described which will be new, novel,
and of utility; which will be efficient for the purposes for which it is intended; which will save time; which will save the cable from the excessive wear caused by slipping through the clamps; which will shift the load from one clamp to the other without stopping the drilling; which Will fit either a right or left handed twist cable; which will prevent the cable from becoming untwisted and some of its strands from bearing all the weight which should be carried by all of them together; which will equalize the weight carried, distributing it on the whole cable; which will permit of continuous drilling after the drill- 0 ing has been put in operation; which will allow the cable to be held firmly without the necessity of putting on it the extreme pressure which is now necessary; which will provide for greater and better gripping facilities of the line, or cable; that will be efiicient in use in pumping Wells, and in raising or, lowering quickly the pump rods therein; which will provide easy and quick means for raising and lowering pump rods in pumping wells.
In the present manner of using temper screws each time the cable is slipped through the clamps, the wire line becomes worn to a certain extent and an amount of it is sliced off. After the rope slips through the clamps for a few feet the wire line has a tendency to follow the twist of the cable and for this reason will untwist the lineand some of the strands so that the full weight of the drill ing tools will not draw it back in its proper position and such strands will remain loose and be subject to greater friction .and wear than the others. One, or a few strands of the cable will have more tension than the others and as a result thecable becomes irregular and out of shape and loses a large percentage of its strength. device will f obviate all of the above objections.
With these and other objects in view as will more fullyappear my invention consists in the construction, novel features, and combination of parts hereinafter more fully de scribed, pointed out in the claims hereto appended, andfillust'rated in the accompanying two-sheet drawing, of which,

It is understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, shape, weight and other details of construction, within the scope of my invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or broad principle of my invention and without sacrificing any of the advantages thereof; also that the drawings are to be interpreted as being illustrative and not restrictive.
One embodiment of my invention is shown as follows: I show the ordinary parts of a standard drilling rig for the purposes of illustrating the application of my device such parts are the Sampson post .1, Sampson post braces 2, 3, a walking beam 4, connecting therewith at 5, pulleys 6 and pulleys 7 for co-operatively holding a. temper jack elevator rope 8, and a counterbalance weight 9 for balancing the weight of the taper bar and its working parts. The duplicate pulleys and rope and weight on the opposite side of the Sampson post 1 and walkingbeam 4 are not shown in the drawing. I also show what is commonly called the head ache post 10, and a telegraph wheel valve turn 11, and a reversing handle or rod 12 therefor. All of these parts have the usual uses for such parts. Adapted to depend from the walking beam 4 I provide a taper bar 13 being fastened at 14 to the said elevator rope 8 and balanced or supported by counterbalanced weight 9. A. rame 15 is provided for housing the taper bar 13, and has an opening 16 therein; reins 17 and 18 are provided at its sides for guiding and directing the movements of said taper bar; said taper bar 13 is wider at its top 19" than at its bottom 20 and the difference is gradual therebetween; it also isprovided with a plurality of ratchet teeth, or steps, 21 for receiving and co-operating alternately with a pair of toothed dogs 22'and 23. with a cross member 33 securely fastened thereto,'having a lateral threaded perforation 34 in one side for receiving a similarly threaded member 35, said last named member having a handle bar 36 on its outer end and a foot member 37 on its inner end for com-' reins 17 and 18 and for keeping said bushing blocks reasonably taut between said reins, and
. to enable the taper bar to pass up and down easily and follow its general taper. Said bushing blocks 38 and 39 may both be so bulged if desired and they also have other grooves 42 and 43 for slidably fitting over the inside edges of cross member 33. The lower, end 20 of said taper bar 13 is fitted with a head 44 rigidly held by said temper jack, therebv preventing its turning, eliminating the jocky stick commonly used, and for suitably holding links 45 and 46, said links being adapted for holding clamp hooks 47 on which is suspended clamping member 48 and its accompanying and adjusting parts for gripping said line orcabl'e 49 atits lower gripping point. It is preferred in clamping member 48 to use the same form of clamps and slips with corrugations therein as is shown at 51, 52 and 53 in Fig. 4. and similar tightening and releasing means as are shown at 54, 58. 59, and 61 as shown in Fig. 6.
I provide an upper line clamping means adjacent said socket 30 and handle member 31. This comprises a thickened lower portion 59 of rein 18 and a'companion clamping member '61, both having a semicircular recessed inside nortionfor holding slips 50 and 52, said slips having inside surface corrugations 51. Said slips have a countersunk hole 53 in which to screw the slip against the side of said clampmg members 59 and 61. A bifurcated arm 54 is pivotally anchored at 55 on saidcrossmember 33 having a threaded perforation 56 in its central portion for receiving a simiin lieu of larly threaded neck 57 having a turning handle 58 connected to said neck. A movablearm 61 ispivo-tally anchored at 60 on said cross-member 3.3 and; its free end is adapted for insertion in and for being compressed and held by saidbifurcated arm 54 the central portion of said arm 61 being adapted to hold slips 50 and 52 at their corrugated surfaces 51 securely around cable 49, and when loosened to permit of its passin easily between said slips and clamping members. In operation, when the device is in process of" being used the clamps at 48- are clamped on the cable 49 inthe usual manner after the necessary twist is put in the cable 49, and arm 61 and slips 50 and 52 are left suflici-ently loose to permit cable 49 to render through without causing any friction. Drilling then proceeds'in the usual manner. WVhen it becomes necessary to let the drilling tools down the driller will loosen handle bar 36 sufii'ciently to permit the taper bar 13 (which is the socalled screw) to go down the distance'desired. Said taper bar 13 is tapered from a larger size 19 at top to the smaller size 20 at the bottom so as to prevent its slipping down, only, as it is permitted to be backed off. The driller will proceed as above until taper bar 13 is down its full length when he will tighten slips 50' and 52 around cable 49 therebetween.- He will then loosen slips at 48 permitting the suspending of the drilling tools from clamps 50 and 52. The taper bar 13 will then be carried back to the topmost position in frame 15 by weight 9, acting on elevator rope 8 said rope running through the neck of said frame 15 and through pulley 7 in the extreme top of cross-bar, or walking beam 4, and pulley 6 seated on said bar 4, above the Sampson post 1. Pulley 7 is formed so as to prevent the rope from getting out of the groove therein. The weight 9 may vary in size and weight to compensate or off-set the weight of the taper bar 13 and its working parts. The taper bar 13 maybe stepped up, step by step, when desired, by the dogs 22 and 23, handle 31 on socket 30. When the above has been completed clamps at 48 mav now be tightened, and slips 50 and 52 may now beloosened, and the device be ready for the proceeding with the drilling.
It will be apparent to those familiar with the art to which my invention pertains that continuous drilling will be possible, and will be permitted without the necessity or shutting down to .hitch over as is now usual.
Having thus described my invention what is'claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is: i

prising a frame being adapted for attaching to a standard drilling rig, a bar "tapered from its top to its bottom havin steps or teeth, housed in said frame, a weig t, elevator rope and pulleys adapted for counter balancing and for aiding in raising and lowering said taper bar, dogs adapted for raising, holding and lowering said taper bar, a first clamping means adapted for gripping said taper bar, head means adapted for rigidly holding a second clamping means securely to said taper bar, a second clamping means adapted to depend from said head means and to grip and hold the line used with said rig and the drilling tools at their lower holding point, a third clamping means anchored adjacent said first clamping means adapted for holding said line in its upper holding position and for permitting said line to render therethrough.
2. The combination with a standard oil and gas well drilling rig, and the line and the drilling tools used therewith, of a device of the class described, comprising a frame being adapted for attaching thereto, a bar tapered from its top to its bottom having steps or teeth, housed in said frame, a weight, elevator rope and pulleys adapted for counter-balancing and for aiding in raising and lowering said taper bar, dogs adapted for raising, hold ing and lowering said taper bar, a first clamping means adapted for gripping said taper bar, head means adapted for rigidly holding asecond clamping means securely to said taper bar, a second clamping means adapted to depend from said head means and to grip and hold the line used with said rig and the drilling tools at their lower holding point, a third clamping means anchored adjacent said first clamping means adapted for holding said line in its up er holding position and for permitting said line to render therethrough.

A device of the class described, comprising a frame being adapted for attaching to a standard oil and gas well drilling rig, and for housing and guiding a taper bar, a taper bar tapered from top to bottom having steps for raising, holding and lowering a weight, elevator rope and pulleys, adapted for counterbalancing and aiding in raising and lowering said taper bar, a first clamping means attached to said frame adapted for gripping said taper bar, a second clamping means anchored on said frame for gripping the line of said rig at the upper hold thereon and permitting it to render therethrough having inside corrugated gripping surfaces, a head adapted for rigidly holding a third clamping means securely to said taper bar, a third clamping means adapted to depend from said head having inside corrugated gripping surfaces for gripping and holding said line and the drilling tools and permitting said line to render therethrough, dogs adapted for alternately raising and holding step by step said taper bar in said frame.

A device of the class described, comprising a frame being adapted for attaching to a standard oil and gas well drilling rig, and for housin and guiding a taper bar, a taper bar tapere from top to bottom having steps for raising, holding and lowering a weight, elevator rope and pulleys, adapted for counterbalancing and aiding in raising and lowering said taper bar, a first clamping means attached to said frame including a pair of bushing blocks being adapted for guiding said taper bar, having rounded outer surfaces for easy movement within said frame, said clamping means being adapted for gripping said taper bar and frame, a second clamping means anchored on said frame for gripping the line of said rig at the upper hold thereon and permitting it to render therethrough having inside corrugated gripping surfaces, a head adapted for rigidly holding athird clamping means securely to said taper bar, a third clamping means adapted to depend from said head having inside corrugated gripping surfaces for gripping and holding said line and the drilling tools and permitting said line to render therethrough, dogs adapted for alternately raising and holding step by step said taper bar in said frame.
