Specicaton of Letters'atent. 1 Pateted Apla, 1920.
Application filed April 11, 1919. ySerial 110,289,342.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM WALKER, of 17' Millbrae Crescent, Langside, Glasgow, Scotland, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented a certain new and useful Support for Pneumatic lTools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to what is known as a rig-up for supporting pneumatic tools in shipbuilding and like work.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of rig-up adaptedl particularly, for supporting pneumatic riveting hammers.
ln order that the invention may be clearly understood l have hereunto appended an explanatory sheet of drawings showing the improved rig-up.
Figure 1 is a plan view and Fig. 2 a side view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3 3, F ig, 1.
Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 4 4, Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a side view of the device in position for work.
T he device comprises a frame consisting oi' two parallel tubular members 1, 2, of about sevenl feet in length these members carrying, at the one end, a or holder 3 for supporting the pneumatic hammer 'or other pneumatic tool this jaw being pivotally mounted, at 4, in the cross dbar 5 connecting the tubes at that end. At the opposite end the members are connected by a cross bar 6 forming the base of the iframe. Located centrally between the tubes l, 2, is a shorter, third, tube 7 having, .at the ends, blocks 8, 9, the block 8 carrying two rollers 10 and two grooved wheels 11, the rollers bearing against the one side oi' the tubes 1, 2, and the wheels engaging the other sidesee Fig. 3. Similarly the block 9 has the tubes 1, 2,-see Fig. 4. It will be noted the grooved wheels 11 are at the one side of the tubes 1, 2, while the grooved wheels 12` justed relatively-,withthe 'tubes 1, 2', and
At the end of the bar is a bracket 17 carry- I ing wheels 18. Connected to the tube 7 is a block 19 through which passes a threaded rod 20 this rod havingron it a nut with arm 21 between which nut and the block a spiral spring 22 is fitted. The screw rod 20, which passes freely through the block, has a nut 24 on its end.
The construction is such that when the device is secured to the structure being riveted, say, a ship, the pneumatic hammer can be held in place in the jaw 3 and pivotally turned to suit the work. rlhe tube 7 'constitutes a support and is held in position, at the ships side, by means of the threaded rod 2O which is passed through a hole in the ships plating A (Fig. 5) and secured at the inside thereof by means of a nut and at the outside by nut 24. The spring 22, when the tube is so secured, gives a cushioning action wh'ich tends to press the frame toward the plating A and hold the hammer up to its work. The device is retained in place, at a desired distance fromthe ships side, by means of the fulcrum bar 13 with its rollers 18 which latter bear against the plating, the bar being adjusted as desired by means of the holes 14 and pin 15. The spring can be compressed more or less, as desired, by the nut 21. f
As the riveting proceeds the traine, if arranged vertically as shown at Fig. 5, can be pulled upward or pushed downward as desired, the frictional grip of the wheels and rollers being suiiicient,A to hold it in place on the support 7. Q
Having nowhfully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is grooved wheels 12 and rollers 13a engaging 1. .A rig-up for supporting pneumatic riveting tools, comprising a frame composed of parallel members, a holder for the tool carried by the frame, a central support .o n which the frame is slidably arranged said support having end and intermediate blocks, guide wheels for the parallel members of the frame carried by the end blocks, means for securing the support, a cushioning spring in conjunction with the intermediate block, and a fulcrum bar carried by one of the end blocks, substantially as set forth.
of the block 9v 2. A rig-up for supporting pneumatic cushioning spring in conjunction with the riveting tools, comprising a frame composed intermediate block, and a fulcrum bar adof parallel members,a holder for the tool justably carried by one of the end blocks, carried by the frame, a central support on substantially as set forth.
5 which the frame is slidably arranged said In testimony whereof I affix my signature lo support having end and intermediate blocks, in presence of tWo Witnesses.
