Description

UNITED S'rA'rEs PATENT OFFICE.
LAWRENCE E. STEPHENS AND SAMUIEL F. SHAY, OF TERRELL, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WIND-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,962, dated January 11, 1876; application filed September 14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LAWRENCE E. STE- PHENS and SAMUIEL F. SHAY, of Terrell, in the county of Kaufman and. in the State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wind-Wheels; and do heremore particularly set forth.
In the annexed drawings, making part of 'this specification, the figures represent perspcctive views of my dome in dili'erent positions.
The dome A is made octagonal, or round, or other suitable shape, and large enough to surround the wind-wheel. To the bottom of this dome are arranged wheels or rollers D D, which rest upon a suitable table or way, so that the dome may be allowed to revolve. or turn with ease. B B represent two doors, which are connected at top and bottom by straps or webbing O G, to prevent said doors from opening farther than is desirable. Op-
posite the center of the doors B B, and on the other side of the dome, is a vane, F, and on each side of this vane are the doors G G. The
doors G G should be closed by means of a spring or weight, the tension or weight being so regulated ,that the said doors will open outward when the pressure of the wind in the dome is greater than desired. E represents a valve in the top of the dome, which is also intended for the escape of wind when the pressure is too strong.
It will readily be perceived that the tension of the springs applied to the doors G or the weight of the valve E may be so regulated that when the pressure of wind is greater than required for the wheel the doors will open or the valve rise sufficiently to allow the surplus to escape. The vane, of course, acts, as is always the case; and keeps the doors B B to the wind.
Having thus fully described our invention,
what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
g The combination of the round or polygonal dome A mounted upon wheels D D, the hinged doors B B connected by the webbing (l O, the vane F, and the doors G G, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. g
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 31st day v of July, 1875.
