UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
s'rAxn POCKET.
Application filed October 20, 1927. Serial No. 227,432.
My invention relates to stake pockets ing ledge portion 17 of the stake pocket when for securing stakes to cars and more particuthe door is tilted and swung open. larly to that type in which is embodied a Assuming the door to be in a closed posiswinging door to the pocket, said door being tion, as shown in Fig. l, and it is desired 5 capable of being lifted vertically and to open the door and release the car stake,
swung to one side when opened and not rethe door 3 is lifted in a vertical direction, 60 quiring any additional locking means for by means of the finger 18, causing the door holding the door whcn in a. closed position. to tilt about the member 4 as a fulcrum un- An object of the invention is to provide a til the surface 19 of the door is free of enstake pocket with a door which can be easily gagement with the keeper 14. The door is opened and swung to one side. now in the position as shown in Fig. 3. 65 Another object of the invention is to pro 1th the tilting of the door the projecting vide a hinge for such door which will not portion 16 describes a downward path until become easily damaged and is not liable to it is below the underside 20 of the inclined bind so as to prevent the opening of such a ledge 17 on the stake pocket. The door is (100K now swung outwardly and away from the 7 Another object of the invention is to procar until its assumes the position shown in vide a construction which, upon the open- F lg. 41-. As it will be noted from Fig. 4 the ing of the door, will so position. the door so door when opened retains the same tilted pothat it will be in looking position and will S1tion as shown in Fig. 3 where the door is look automatically when closed. tilted to clear the keeper 14. This retention 7 Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan of. such a position is caused by the projectview of the stake pocket and door, attached ing portion 16 of the door, passing under to a portion of a car: F ig. 2 is an elevational and into contact with the inclined or posii f th stake pocket and door; Fig. 3 is tioning ledge 17 of the stake pocket when an elevation of the stake pocket with the the door is swung open. The resilient mem- S0 door in tilted position before being swung her or torsion spring 10 around the shaft 6 open; Fig. 4 is an elevation of the stake of the rotatable butt portion 4 receives an pocket with the door in opened position. initial twist with the tilting movement of Referring now in detail to the'drawings, the door and retains this twist throughout reference character 1 indicates a portion of a all the Opening movements of the door. One car to which the stake pocket casting 2 is end portion 21 of the spring passes into the secured; reference character 3 indicates the rotatable butt member at and the other end vertically tilting and transversely swinging 22 is held in a slot 23; of the stake pocket 35 door attached thereto. .Reference character Ca ting.
l indicates the rotatable butt portion of the Upon swinging the door closed, the pordoor hinge, comprising a head and a shaft tion 16 of the door passes out of contact With portion 6. The shaft portion 6 is contained the inclined ledge 17 of the pocket casting in the side 7 of the stake pocket and is sewhen the door is directly over the keeper 14.
40 cured by means of a nut 8 to a rib 9 of the The spring 10 being in torsion during the stake pocket side wall. Encircling the shaft closing movement of the door and released .6 intermediate the rib 9 and the head 5 is a when the member 16 passes out of contact resilient. member 10 which is shown in the with the inclined ledge, resumes its original preferred form as a torsion spring. The position and forces the door down into the 45 head 5 of the rotatable butt portion 4 has an keeper .slot 14 of the stake pocket. This inopening 11 formed therein through which sures automatic positive locking engagement the pin member 12 passes to secure the door of the door with its keeper When the door 3 t the hinge butt. The opposite side 13 of is closed. N 0 additional effort is required of the stake pocket has a slot 14 formed therein the operator in locking the door other than 50 which acts as a keeper to engage the portion to swing the door closed. Accidental un- 15 of the door and hold the door when closed. locking or opening of the door is resisted by On the door, adjacent the butt portion of the the spring on the hinge butt and the Weight hinge, is a projecting portion 16 which is of the door itself. adapted to engage the inclined or position- Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1- 1. A stake pocket having a hinged door adapted to tilt vertically and swing transversely in opening and closing, a butt hinge for said loor, the butt of said hinge being adapted to tilt with said door.
2. A stake pocket having a hinged door adapted to tilt vertically and swing transversely in opening and closing, a butt hinge for said door having a rotatable butt portion and a resilient restraining means cooperating with said butt portion.
3. A stake pocket having a hinged door adapted to tilt vertically and swing transversely in opening and closing, a hinge for said door having a rotatable butt, a torsion spring encircling a portion of said butt, one end of said spring engaging the hinge butt and the other end engaging the stake pocket.
4. A stake pocket having a hinged door adapted to tilt vertically and swing transversely in opening and closing, a rotatable butt for said hinge connected to said stake pocket, a keeper on said pocket adapted to engage a portion of said door, a projecting portion on said door and a positioning ledge on said pocket adapted to engage the projecting portion of said door.
5. A stake pocket having a vertical tilting and transversely swinging door, a hinge at one end of the door, a keeper engaging the other end of said door, a rotatable butt for said hinge, a positioning ledge on said pocket and a corresponding engaging portion on said door.
6. The combination in a stake pocket of a three sided enclosure, a tiltable hinged door for the open side of said enclosure, a keeper for said door, a rotatable butt for said door hinge, a resilient member cooperating with the rotatable hinge butt, an in.- clined ledge on said stake pocket and a projecting portion on said door engaging said inclined ledge.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
