UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUTH FREEDMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LINGERIE FASTENER.
Application filed November 11, 1927. Serial No. 232,546.
This invention relates to improvements in.
fastening devices, and more particularly to a novel fastener for lmgerie.
It is customary for ladies at the present time, to wear a number of undergarments on dergarments, these straps are within view, ,1 and as the shoulder straps of the same frequently shift relatively to one another, and are often of different colors, the effect is dis pleasing.
In an effort to eliminate the disadvantages, sometimes all of the shoulder straps, with the exception of the ones on the costume slip or brassiere, are dropped under the arms, and then a draw string at the top of one of the 2 garments is drawn tightly across the chest to hold the garments with the drop shoulder straps. At the same time, use may be made of safety pins to secure the tops of the undergarments together.
This expedient is not entirely satisfactory, for the pins frequently damage the garments, and if the user is stout, the tightening of the draw string accentuates the bust.
The primary object of the present device is to furnish a fastener which will secure the straps together in such a manner that the single pair of straps of the brassiere or costume slip will, through the medium of the fastening device, hold the straps of the other undergarments, while the. latter are suspended, and will prevent the garments, under the outer garments, from slipping down.
A further object is to provide a fastening device of the double clasp type, which may be made of any suitable material, such as resilient metal, and may'have an ornamental appearance. The visible or outer clasp of this device embraces two or more shoulder straps and extends over on top of the costume slip or evening gown of the strap type. Then all but one of these straps are dropped and slipped into theflower clasp which is then clamped. This method gives the undergarments which are held by these straps a doublesecurity, thus making itimpossible for these undergarments to drop.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a lingerie fastener of the double clasp type which is of simple and inexpensive construction, and which may be manufactured from one or more pieces of any suitable material.
With the foregoing objects outlined and with other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the novel features hereinafter de scribed in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings,
Fig. l is a perspective View of a portion of a human body, and showing my improved lingerie fastener in use.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the fastener, and illustrating the manner in iwhich it secures the variousshoulder straps together.
Fig. 8 is a side View of the fastener.
Fig. 4 is a rear View of the same.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on'line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a front view, but showing the fastener as made of two pieces of material, instead of one.
In the drawings, 1 designates a brassiere having the usual shoulder straps 2. Under the costume slip or brassiere, other undergarments are generally worn, and these I have designated 3, and 4 in Fig. 2. Each of these undergarments also has shoulder straps 5and 6.
When outer clothing of opaque material is worn, all of the shoulder straps are generally placed over the shoulders, but when waists or dresses of sheer material, such as georgette or chiffon are worn, it is. desirable to drop some of the shoulder straps to present a neat appearance.
With my present invention, the dropped shoulder straps 5 and 6 are secured in position, and they function to hold up the undergarments 3 and 4; one of the fasteners being connected to the shoulder strap 2, and slipped over the hem at the top of the costume slip. 7
From Figs. 3 to o inclusive, it may be seen that the fastener consists of a. body 7, preferably made of a sheet metal stamping, and having a wide notch 8 at its upper end, and a reduced portion, or neck 9'at its lower end. Two arms 10 and 11 extend upwardly from the body, and the arm 10 is hooked, as shown at 12, to provide one element of a snap fastener. The other arm 11 merges into a downwardly extending arc-shaped cross bar 13, which is provided at its extremity with a fastening element 14, adapted to snap over the element 12, and thus form a clasp.
A straight cross bar 15 is integral with, and suspended from the neck 9, and this cross bar has a hooked fastening element 16 at one of its ends. cross bar merges into a clasp arm 17 which is provided. at its extremity with a hooked fastening element 18, that is adapted to snap over the element 16. It will be noted from Fig. 5, that the arm 17 has its central por tion bent inwardly towardthe cross .bar 15, in order that the clasp may grip the dropped shoulder straps, and I also prefer, as shown in Fig. 2, to bend the upper and lower edges 19 of the arm 17 toward the bar 15 to insure a tight grip.
In using my improved device, the crescent-shaped bar 13 of the upper clasp is connected to the brassiere or costume slip, and all of the shoulder straps are placed between the body 7 and 13. After this, the parts 7 and 13 are pressed together to cause the elements 12 and 14 to snap into place. The shoulder straps 5 or 6, or both, may be dropped in the usual manner, but now they will extend through the notch 8, and through the loop 20 of the lower clasp of my device. WV hen the arm 17 is secured in position by closing the elements 16 and 18, these shoulder straps 5 and 6 will now be tightly gripped by my improved device.
Due to the notch 8, the shoulder straps 5 and 6, although turned down and dropped, are not visible from the exterior of the brassiere or costume slip.
When my device is used, the rear part of the undergarments are also held up, as the straps 5 and 6 may be threaded into the lower clasp, and after this clasp is closed, such shoulder straps will be held securely in place, and cannot slip down off the body.
\Vhen the parts have been operated as above described, they will assume the positions shown in Fig. 2, as the straps 5 and 6 will be dropped over notch 8 and then clamped in position, not alone by the arm 13, but also by the arm 17, thus insuring a double grip.
I prefer to manufacture the device from stamped resilient sheet metal, in order that the parts may normally tend to assume the positions shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
Instead of making the device of one piece, of sheet metal, I may modify the same in many respects. For instance, I may make the arm 13 of a separate piece of material, and secure it to the body 7 by riveting or hinging as shown at 22 in Fig. 6. This will permit the upper clasp to open widely in order that the straps may be adjusted properly.
While I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention in such manner that The opposite end of the ments to said body, and means for securing the body to a garment having its shoulder straps in normal position.
2. In a lingerie fastener, a body, a bar having one of its ends movably connected to the body, and its other end detaohably connected to the body for removably connecting the body to a garment of the shoulder strap type, and means for detachably connecting the body to the dropped shoulder straps of other undergarments for holding the latter in position.
3. In a lingerie fasteningdevice, a substantially rigid body, a hinged bar connected to the body for detachably connecting the body to an undergarment of the shoulder strap type, and a second hinged bar connected to the body for detachably connecting said body l to other undergarments for the purpose of holding the latter in position. i
4. In a lingerie fastening device, a'substantially rigid body, a clasp bar arranged on one side of said body and having one of its ends hingedly connected to the body, and 1ts other end detachablyconnected to the body for gripping the upper portion of an undergarment, and a clasp bar on the other side of said body adapted to grip the upper portion of another undergarment or their shoulder straps.
. 5. A lingerie fastening device, including a substantially rigid body, a clamping bar arranged on one side of said body, extending across the body, and having one of its ends movably connected to the body and its other end detachably' connected to the body, and
another clamping bar extending across the opposite side of the body and having one of 1ts ends movably connected to the body and its otherend detachably connected to the body, the last mentioned bar being positioned below the first mentioned bar.
6. A lingerie fastener comprising a body portion, a clasp arranged on one side of said body portion, and a second clasp arranged on the opposite side of the body portion, each clasp including a bar having one of its ends hinged to the body and its other end detachably connected to the body.
7. A lingerie fastener, comprising a body portion, a clamping clasp attached to one side of the body portion for securing a garment shoulder strap to the same, and a clamping clasp attached to the opposite side of the body portion and arranged at a lower point for securing the body portion to a second garment, each clasp having one of its ends detachably connected to the body.
8. A lingerie fastener comprising a body portion, a clasp at the upper end of the body portion and arranged at one side of the same, and another clasp on the other side of the body portion and at a lower elevation on the same, one of said clasps having one of its ends detachably connected to the body.
9. A lingerie fastener comprising a body portion, a clasp united with and arranged on one side of the body portion, said body portion having an edge to abut against a shoulder strap of an undergarment,'and a clasp on the opposite side of the body portion having its ends secured to the body portion near the ends of said edge.
10. A lingerie fastener comprising a sub-- .stantially flat body portion provided at its lower end with a clasp positioned on one side of the body portion, and a second clasp arranged on the opposite side of the body portion and having a downwardly projecting cross bar.
11. In combination, a substantially flat body portion provided with fastening devices at its opposite sides, a garment shoulder strap secured in position by one of said fastening devices, passing over an edge of the body portion, and also secured in position by the other one of said fastening devices, and a garment having a shoulder strap passing through one of said fastening devices and its upper edge connected to the body portion by the last mentioned fastening device.
12. A lingerie fastener comprising a body portion, clasps on opposite sides of the body portion, said body portion having a notch in its upper end, to receive dropped shoulder straps for the purpose of concealing the latter when the fastener is in use, each of said clasps having one of its ends hinged to the body portion, and its other end detachably connected to the body portion.
