WALTER J. PARKER, OF SAN J OSE, CALIFORNIA.
IMPI ROVEMENT IN DUST-FANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,740, dated January 4, 1876 application filed May 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER J. PARKER, of San J os, Santa Clara county, California, have invented certain Improvements in Dust- Pans, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in providing a dust-pan which will hold and protect the dust or sweepings from wind, or from spillin g the same previous to opening a door, which is provided for that purpose.
To carry out my object I provide the dustpan with a recess or box, of convenient size, to hold sweepings,'dust, 860. A door, which is connected in front of the recess or box, can be opened and shut by means of a lever, constructed for that purpose.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is bad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dustpan. Fig. 2 is a side sectional elevation, showing the door when raised. Fig. 3 is a rod, to which the cover is attached, with cog-wheels attached at each end.
A is the base of the pan. B is the box or recess. a is the door. 0 c are cog-wheels. D is the axle, which is connected to the door a.
f f are horizontal cog-bars, which work in cogs c. n is a thumb-piece, and sis a spiral spring.
The operation of my dust-pan is as follows:
Pressure on the thumb-piece 'n depresses the vertical ratchet-bars ff, which revolve-the cogs c, with their axle D, and raises the door a, as shown 'in Fig. 2, when the dust or sweepings can be swept in the box or recess B;
then, relaxing the pressure on thumb-piece n, the spiral spring 8 forces the door a in its proper place, and prevents the dust or sweepin gs from spilling.
By the above arrangement I furnish a dust-
