Application filed January 27, 1923.

This invention relates to improvements in ironing boards of the foldable type.

One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an ironing board which while rigid and firm in use may be easily and quickly folded to a closed position to occupy a minimum amount of space for easy and convenient storage when not in use.

A further object of the invention is to pro vide an ironing board in which the locking means will automatically swing to an unlocked position when the ironing board is inverted.

A further object of the invention is to provide an ironing board which is of simple construction, is strong and durable. and is well adapted for the purpose described.

lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved ironing board and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.

In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:

Fig. 1 is a side view of the improved ironing board shown in open position; and

Fig. 2 is an inverted view thereof with the parts in folded position.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates the top or ironing board proper which may be of any desirable elongated form, but is preferably of rectangular form with the front end 5 tapered. The lower side of the board is provided with a transversely extending inverted U-shaped bracket 6 to which is pivotally connected the upper end portions of a pair of supporting legs 7 Saidlegs diverge downwardly and are connected together near their lower end portions by a transverse reinforcing member 8. The upper ends of the legs bracingly engage the lower side of the board when in open position. A single leg 9 connected at its upper end to the inner end bottom portion of the board by a hinge 10 projects downwardly and outwardly from the said board to form a firm support therefor. The upper end of the single leg also bracingly engages the under side of the board when in open position. The upper half portion of the leg 9 is provided with an elongated slot 11 to slidably receive the gravity locking member 12 which is pivotally connected at its upper end to the inner end of the board by a pivotal Serial No. 615,299.

The slotted portion 11 of the leg 9 is provided with a transverse rod let which is engaged by the shoulder or notch 15 formed in the lower edge of the locking member 12 so that when said leg is swung to open position shown in Fig. 1, the latch will drop into locking engagement with said trans verse pin and hold the upper end of the leg firmly against the bottom portion of the table. The opposite end portions 12 of the latch 12 are curved towards the top or board so that when folded the parts will rest close to the board.

The outer ends of the transverse pin 14 have eyes 16 through which extend brace rods 17 which are pivotally connected at their outer ends to the leg members 7 by screws or bolts 18. The inner ends of the brace rods are formed with hook portions 19 to prevent the rods disengaging the eyes 16 and per initting said rods to slide freely through the eyes when the legs are folded against the board. The eyed ends 16 of the transverse pin are so arranged with relation to the brace rods 17, that the leg 9 in swinging to folded position will swing the eyed pin so that the said eyes will turn from the hooked portions of the rods to the straight portions thereof without disengaging or binding said rods.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the ironing board is of very simple construction, and is well adapted for the purpose described.

lVhat I claim my invention is:

1. An ironing table, comprising a board member, a bracket secured to a medial part of the bottom portion thereof, a pair of connected supporting legs pivotally connected to the bracket, another supporting leg member pivotally connected to the bottom portion of the board member adjacent one end and having a transverse 'rod with an eye at one end, a locking member pivotally connected to one end portion of the board at a distance from the bracket and extending inwardly therefrom and having a shouldered portion which engages a medial portion of the transverse rod, and a brace member pivotally connected to one of the pair of legs and having a slidable engagement with said eye, and having a hook at its outer end.

2. An ironing table. comprising a board member, an inverted U-shaped bracket secured to a medial part of the bottom portion thereof, a pair of legs pivotally connected to the bracket, a single leg member hinged to the bottom portion of the board member adjacent one end and having an elongated openin therein and an eyed end transverse rod extending across the elongated opening, a locking member pivoted to one end portion of the bottom portion of the board member at a distance from the bracket and extending inwardly through the elongated opening and lockingly engaging the transverse rod of the single leg, and a brace member pivotally connected to one oil the legs and having a hooked end portion and a portion which has a sliding engagement with the eye of the transverse rod.

3. Anironing table, comprising a board member, an inverted U-shaped bracket secured medially to the bottom portion thereof, a pair of legs pivotally connected to said bracket and having their upper end portions engageable with the board member when in open position, a single leg member hinged medially to the bottom portion of the board member and having its upper end portion engageable with the board when in open position, said single leg member having an elongated opening, a transverse rod extending across said opening, and having eyes at its opposite ends, a locking member pivotally connected to the outer end of the board at a distance from the bracket and extending inwardly through the opening of the single leg and having a shoulder which lockingly engages the rod when said leg member is in open position, and brace rods pivotally connected to the outer sides of the pair of "legs and slidably extending through the eyes of the rod and having hooked end portions for limiting the movement of said rods through said eyes.
