This invention relates to an. improvement in a folding table, particularly in a table which can be readily opened and used for picnics or other purposes by automobile parties or others being adapted for mounting either upon a part of the automobile or it is not cumbersome and can be transported without difficulty, which table hassupportthat theta'blecan be held "level under various conditions.
Other objects of this invention reside in the details of construction and other features as will appear from the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof, and in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a preferred embodiment of this invention applied to the side of an automobile;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view on a reduced scale of this embodiment in the folded position;
Fig 3 is a side elevation of the table in the Fig. 2 position;
Fig. t is a sectional view taken along the line 14l-14= of Fig. 2;
Figs. 5 and 6 are enlarged sectional views taken along the lines 15-15 and 16-16 of Fig. 2 with parts in Fig. 5 broken away;
Figs. 7 and 8 are side and front elevation views of an adapter that may be employed under certain conditions; and
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 1 showing the adapter in use.
The preferred form illustrated in Figs. 1.
to 6 inclusive comprises a table top across the underside of each end of which are secured cross pieces 51, 52. Pivotally secured to the cross piece 51 are legs or braces 53, which as here shown consist of a U-shaped rod, the center of which is held at the edge of the cross piece 51 by straps 54. In the cross piece 52 are formed slots or recesses 55 so located as to receive the ends of the mg means that can readily be adjusted so 7 caps 61 provided "at their outer end with legs 53 whenthe table is folded and thus conserve space.
Pivoted in brackets at the edge of the cross piece 52 is a loop 57 preferably-an integral piece of metal which"actstodimitthe opening of the legs 53, as shown'in Fig.1 and also to hold the legs intlie 'folded'position as shown in F1gs. 2, 3 ands.

Threaded upon the ends ofthe legs 53"are rubber tips 62. The caps can be adjusted upon the legs in order to make the table top level. This can obviously be done quickly, and thus any side tipping due to the position of the car can be taken up. The tips 62 prevent any slipping ot' the legs and also any marring of the upholstery. Certain makes of automobiles have the upper side edges of the open models sharply inclined. In order to allow for this and to provide a secure position for the table, which would not be possible if the brackets 59 alone were used, adapters are employed for each bracket. Each adapter or bracket (33 is composed of spaced vertically disposed end members 66 formed with inclined lower edges adapted to seat on the top edge of the body of the car, as shown in Figure 9. A hearing memberti? connects the tops .of the end members 66 and extends at right angles thereto. The end members are further connected by a vertical depending portion 65 spaced from hearing member 67 and which is adapted to engage the outer or front side of the car body. The brackets 59, which form extensions of the bearing members 67, project through the spaces between the members 67 and the depending portions 65 and have their flanges engaged with the front faces ofthe depending portions 65.
\Vhile two embodiments of. this invention have been shown and described, applicant is not limited thereto, since it is obvious that other embodiments can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of this I 7 Fixed 7 to the underside of the table top 50 is a invention as set forth in the following claims.
Having thus set forth my invention what I claim as new and for which I desire protection by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a pair of bracket members each having spaced vertically disposed end members formed with inclined lower edges adapted to seat on the top of an inclined support, and an inner bearing member connecting the end members and extending at rightangles thereto, said members each being further connected by a vertical depending portion spaced from said inner bearing member and adapted to engage the front of a support, and a table top having spaced out ardly extending extensions adapted to engage beneath said bearing members and through the spaces between the latter and the depending portions, said extensions having down turned ends engageable with the fronts of the depending portions to detachably hold said table top in operative position.
2. In an automobile table, a pair of bracket members each formed to seat on a support and having ends, a front engageable with the front of the support and connected to the ends, a bearing member spaced from the front and connected to the ends, and a table top having a pair of extensions each formed to engage beneath the bearing members and to extend through the space between the latter and the fronts and having depending parts formed to engage said fronts.
3. In a folding table. brackets projecting from one end of said table and having flanges bent downwardly at right angles thereto, said brackets being adapted to rest upon the edge of a sul'iport, legs pivotally secured to said table near the opposite end thereof, a loop pivoted at the bracket end and extending below said legs. and a catch fixed to said table, said catch adapted. when said table folded, to engage said loop and hold said legs against; the underside of said table with the legs projecting beyond the bracket end of said table, and said loop when disengaged from said catch, being adapted to support; said legs below and at an angle to said table, whereb ends of said legs will engage said support and coact with said brackets to hold said table in a horizontal position.
