MILLARD VON HQALLE, OF PALISADES PARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOB TO THE STAND- ARD CORSET COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF MASSACHU- SETTS.
CORSET.
Application filed June 5, 1923, Serial No. 843,513. Renewed October 29, 1928.
The object of this invention is to provide;
.a corset that while serving all the purposes of the ordinary corset will also act to elevate and support the abdomen of the wearer.
A concrete embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is an elevation of the inner side of a. corset showingthe abdominal lifting and supporting means in reflexed posit-ion;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the abdominal lifting and supporting means in flexed position, adjacent parts of the corset being indicated in broken lines.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, on the line 83 of Fig. 1, of the abdominal lifting and supporting means: and
Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line of Fig. 2 showing the resultant configuration of the abdominal lifting and supporting means when under tension.
The purpose of this invention may be accomplished by providing a corset on the inner side and at a suitable distance from the front center thereof with two tabs 1 for attachment of the abdominal lifting and supporting means 2. These tabs are diametrically opposed to each other and are secured to the corset at one end, the other end, that nearest the center of the corset, being free. They are each provided with means 3 for the attachment and variable adjustment of the support. The length of each of these tabs 1 increases as the lower edge 4 is approached.
The abdominal lifting and supporting means 2 comprises two bands 5 and 6 of resilient material, such as elastic webbing, in overlapped and angular relation to each other, bound or stitched together at both sides and provided at these sides with one componentof suitable means 3 for the attachment and variable adjustment of the support to the corset by means of tabs 1. The bands 5 and 6 of the support 2 are each composed of two bias members joined together at the 'center of the support. The relation of the two members 5 of the upper band 5 of the support to each other is such that the upper and lower edges thereof follow a line that is inclined very slightly downwardly away from the central point of juncture while the relation of the two bias members 6 of the lower band 6 is such that the upper and lower edges thereof are inclined away from the central point of juncture upwardly to a substantial degree. The bands 5 and 6 of the support are oined together at the centerby a vertlcal reinforcing strip preferably provided with stiffening means such as whale bone. The relative positions of the members 5 and 6 comprising respectively the bands 5 and 6 together with the overlapped relation of the bands to each other provide a support that is substantially Wider at the center there of than it is at either end, the uppermost-edge 7 of which forms a line that deviates from the horizontal but slightly downwardly away from the center, while the lowermost edge 9 is inclined sharply upwardly away from the center thereof, the overlapping being greatest at the sides of the support. This relation of the parts provides for considerable slack along the lower edge of band 5 the slack being taken up when the support is under lateral tension, as it is while being worn, and thus eliminates any cutting edge that might discomfort the wearer. The slack, produced by this peculiar arrangement of the parts, along the upper edges of the two members 6 of band 6 when payed out by the tension exerted upon it when in wearing position permits of the expansion along this line greater than is possible along the lowermost edge of the support, thus forcing the lowermost part of the support to curve inwardly toward the body of the wearer as shown in Fig. 4, the efiect upon the body of the wearer being to lift the superfluous flesh of the abdomen and hold it in elevated position. The tabs 1 are approximately of the same width as the ends of the support 2 and the fastening and adjusti ng means here shown are in the form of hooks 8 and eyes 3, there being shown two series of eyes on tabs 1 in parallel relation and one series of hooks 8 on each side of the support 2, which engage either series of eyes 3 on tabs 1, this arrangement admitting of the adjustment of the support to the needs ofthe wearer.
The support 2 is attached at one end to one of the tabs 1, in such position that the edge 9 is lowermost and the corset is then adjusted to the body of the wearer after which the other end of the support 2 is fastened to the other tab 1, the length crosswise of the support being less thanthe distance, across the front of the corset, between the tabs 1.
I claim:
1. The combination with a corset, of abdominal lifting and supporting means ading across the front of the corset comprising: two bands extending horizontally across said support efmanently secured together at both ends and at the center of said support, each band consisting of two members of resilient material joined at the center of said support in opposed oblique relation to each other, and each member of one band overlapping in fixed angular relation thereto the corresponding member of the other band, and means for removably attaching said lifting and supporting means to the corset.
2. The combination with a corset, of abdominal lifting and supporting means adjustably removably attached to and extending across the front of the corset comprising: two bands extending horizontally across said support permanently secured together at both ends and at the center of said support, each band consisting of two members of resilient material joined at the center of said support, the members of the upper of said two bands being inclined away from the point of oinder downwardly and those of the lower of said two bands upwardly each member of one band overlapping the corresponding member of the other band, to provide for greater expansion girthwise under tension at the centre of the support than at the bottom edge thereof and thereby to cause the bottom edge ustably removably attached to and extend-- to curve inwardly, and means for adjustably rem'ovably attaching said lifting and sup porting means to the corset.-
3. The combination with a corset, of abdominal lifting and supporting means adjustably removably attached to and extending across the front of the corset comprising: two bands extending horizontally across said support permanently secured together at both ends and at the center of said support, each band consisting of two members of resilient material joined at the center of said support, the members of the upper of said two bands being inclined away from the point of oinder downwardly and those of the lower of said two bands upwardly, the angle of inclination being substantially greater in the members of the lower band than in those of the upper, each member of one band overlapping the corresponding member of the other band, to provide for greater expansion girthwise under tension at the centre of the support than at the bottom edge thereof and thereby to cause the bottom edge to curve inwardly, and means for adjustably removably attaching said lifting and supporting means to the corset.
