Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT lN METALLIC CANISTERS FOR PUTTING UP PAINTS, dc.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 17,163, dated April 28, 1857. i
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. MAsUEY, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Putting up White Lead, Zinc, and other Paints; and I 'do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a metallic vessel with a sliding and revolving bail or handle in such a style that it shall or may be substituted for wooden kegs in the packing for sale or transportation of white lead, zinc, and other paints.
To enable others to make use of my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction, &c. First, however, to a better appreciation of the utility and worth of my invention, I beg leave to state that from one-fourth to a half million of dollars are annully lost to consumers of paints in the United States, owing to the absorption of the oil in which the paint is ground Y by the wood composing the kegs in which it is packed. In many instances the total contents of the keg are spoiled thereby, and, further, by the loss of the kegs, which arethrown away as worthless.
My invention is intended to secure the consumer from loss, rst, by nonabsorption of the oil, and, secondly, by furnishing him with a strong and convenient pot in which to mix `his paint, durable, and actually worth to him more than its original cost. Io that end I take heavy tin or light sheet-iron and form the can A in the ordinary cylindrical shape, and iit the top thereof with a removable cover, B, first strengthening the top by doubling the edge of the tin and folding it inward. This top, in place of being secured with solder, the usual mode of sealing paints in cans, I secure in a manner novel and easily removed, a description of which follows hereinafter.
The packing of paints in cans involves, of course, the necessity of packing said tins in wooden boxes or barrels to secure safety in transportation and shipment. A bail or handle secured to the can in the ordinary way, however desirable it might be, is not feasible, on account of the eXtra space required for packing the same, and consequent enhancement of freight, Ste. To overcome this difli culty, I have invented a bail, C, which, while it secures all the ordinary advantages of such an attachment, does not occupy any extra space, and which furnishes a means simple and certain of securing the cover. In place of permanently aflixing the ears through which the bail passes, E, to the can, I secure them by means of rivets D, which are fixed firmly in the metal, and which allow the ears E to` revolve in any direction. The object of this is to'allow the bail, when not in use, to drop down over the side of the cans. would remain over the top of the can a fixture, and render the can comparatively useless, as you will perceive by holding with your fingers the ears in an upright position. The method of securing the cover to the can is by attaching tothe sides thereof two small wire hooks, F, by the use of a small piece of wire or twine passed over the bend in the end of the bail H, and then over the hook F. The cover of the can is held firmly in its place, and by severing the cord or wire G is easily removed.
- What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use of metallic cans for putting up paints or other substances, of any known form, with ears attached thereto, through which a wire bail may be passed in such a manner as i not to interfere with the packing of the cans, and to render it at once a package for transporting the paint and a convenient and useful pot or pail out of `which to use the same, with a removable cover secured to the can, in the manner and for the purposes herein described and represented.

GEO. A. POTTER,
ROET. I. WADDELL.
