RECEPTACLE FOR M ERCHANDISE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,899, dated August 10, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Randolph, in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Receptacle for Merchandise, of which'the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a receptacle or container for merchandise; and the object in View is to provide, in connection with each receptacle or package, a concealed tag accessible only after the receptacle or package has been opened, whereby the grade .of the goods of a certain brand is designated as a safeguard for both manufacturer and consumer to prevent goods from being misrepresented or bought under misrepresentation without detection.

The device embodying my invention is of special utility in connection with goods which are sold in the sealed receptacles or packages in which they are placed by the manufacturer, and both manufacturer and consumer desire to be protected against goods of an-inferior grade or quality represented as those of a higher grade or quality or as the goods of a manufacturer of established reputation whose goods are known to be of first quality.

Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings, Figure l is a sectional view of a can or receptacle designed to contain paint, varnish, oil, or similar material. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the inner orunder surface of the lid or cover of the receptacle with the identifying-tag attached.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the drawings I have illustrated my invention as employed in connection with such goods as paint, varnish, &c., either in solid, dry, or liquid state, with which it is common to employ receptacles or cans of tin or its equivalent, but I desire it to be understood that this is only one of the classes of receptacles or packages in connection with which my invention may be used.

The identifying-tag 1, which consists in the construction illustrated of a flat metal disk inscribed or stamped distinctively to designate the grade of goods of a certain brand made by a certain manufacturer, is detachably secured to the inner surface of the receptacle 2 (preferably the lid or cover 3 theresuch receptacle or package has been opened, 7

the receptacle or package having been sealed by the manufacturer or others having aninterest in correctly representing the goods.

hen the receptacle or package has been opened, the tag may be detached, and when it is desirable to use the same as a rebatecheck in connection with a rebate system of advertising business they may be presented to the dealer or to the manufacturer fordihe rebate indicated thereon or by some means known to the interested parties. The identification of the goods by the means above described may be made complete and perfectly satisfactory without recourse to this rebate system, the advantage of the latter, and of providing similar means for carrying out the same being that it gives the manufacturer and vender assurance that the person claiming a rebate is entitled to it and also that the amount claimed is correct.

The receptacles or cans with their lids,

which are provided for subsequent fastening and sealing, may be manufactured with the tags temporarily attached thereto in such a position that after the closing and sealing of the receptacle said tag will be concealed and will be accessible only after the seal has been broken, and in practice I have found it convenient to attach the seal by a drop of solder to the inner or under surface of the lid or cover of metallic containers. This tag may be readily detached and yet is not liable to become accidentally displaced.

It will be understood that various changes in the form, proportion ,and the min or details engaging the edge thereof, substantially as specified.
