Description

June 4, 1929. w. MAY 1,715,937
CURRYCOMB Filed 001;. 1928 I C l s 5." w E Patented June 4, 1929.
UNITED STATES PAiEN'r critics WILLIAM MAY, or BELGIUMMWIS'GONSIN, AssIGNon To oneness 0. WILSON, or BELGIUM, WISCONSIN.
GURRYGOMB.
Application filed October 8, 1828. Serial No. 311,081.
This invention pertains to improvements in currycombs, and has primarily for ob ject to provide an cxlcptionally simple, incxpensive, and substantial structure, which is self-cleaning in operation. I
Incidental to the foregoing, further object is to provide a currycomb in which the toothed blades are mounted for oscillatory movement, and cooperate with one another to effect cleaning of the blades during the nor mal carrying operatioin, whereby matting of hair and dirt, with frequent cleaning, is entirely eliminated.
A more specific object resides in the novel method of assembling the parts, whereby rivets, or other securin means, are eliminated.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof.
Figure 1 is a transverse section taken on the line 1-1 of Figure 9.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view, with parts broken away and in section to more clearly illustrate the structural details.
Referring; now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates the back portion of the comb which provides a grip for the operator. strap 2 is adj ustably secured to the back by inserting the ends through pairs of slots 3 formed in the back adjacent the ends. A transverse rib l disposed between each pair of slots serves to strengthen the back and also crimp the ends of the strap 2 to prevent withdrawal of the same.
The back 1 is provided with opposed depending sides 5 which carry the oscillatory blade sections 6. Vi hile various methods of pivotally mounting the sections 6 between the sides 5 may be employed without departing from the present invention, it is preferred A retaining to accomplish the same by punching out a plurality of spaced annular bosses 7, which form the pintles.
The comb sections 6 each comprise annular sleeve portions 8, the adjacent edges which terminate in radial toothed blade members 9, disposed at angles to one another. When as sembled within the back, the sleeve portions receive the bosses or pintles 7, it being understood that the comb sections are assembled in proper position before the sides are bent inwardly to engage the same.
As best shown in Figure 1, the toothed blades are of sufficient le th to engage the sleeve of the adjacent comb section to limit the oscillatory movement of the same. Also, when one of the blades engages the adjacent sleeve, the remaining blade assumes a perpendicular position similar to the -conven tional stationary combs.
In operation, when the comb is drawn over the body of an animal, in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figure 1, the blades assume the position illustrated. Upon the reverse movement of the comb, the comb sections will be automatically oscillated upon their pintles, and during such oscillation the ineifcct-ive blade will cooperate with the previously effective blade and comb any material therefrom as it travels to its operative position, as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1.
From the foregoing explanation, in connection with the drawings, it will be obvious that a very simple, inexpensive and efficient comb has been provided, which will effectually clean itself automatically, thus preventing the matting of dirt and hair in the combs and eliminating the necessity of repeated manual cleaning, required in conventional types of currycombs provided with stationary blades.
It will also be seen that the manufacturing; cost has been reduced to a minimum, due to the novel method of pivotally mounting; the comb sections within the back, which eliminates rivets or other securing means, together with the operations required to assemble the same. Also, due to the simplicity of the present structure, the weight of the same is reduced to a minimum.
I claim 1. A currycomb comprising a back member, and a plurality of comb sections pivotally carried by said back member, each comb ection comprising a pair of toothed blades cooperating with the blades of the adjacent section to clean the same upon the manipulation of the comb.
2. A currycomb comprising a back member, and a plurality of comb sections pivotally carried thereby, each comb section being provided With a pair of radially extending blades disposed at an angle to one another and cooperating with the )lades of the adjacent section to clean the same upon manipulation of the brush.
3. A currycomb comprising a back memher and a plurality of blade sections pivotally carried thereby, each section comprising a sleeve, and a pair of radial blades extending therefrom at an angle to one another and cooperating with the blades of the adjacent sections to clean the same upon manipulation of the comb.
4. A currycomb comprising a back member provided With depending sides, and a plurality of comb sections pivotally carried by said sides, each of said sections having a pair of radial blades disposed at angles to one another and adapted to engage the adjacent section to limit the oscillatory movement of said sections.
5. A currycomb comprising a back member provided with depending sides, a plurality of comb sections each section con'iprising a sleeve portion having a pair of radial toothed blades disposed at an'angle to one another and adapted to engage the sleeve portion of the adjacent section, and means carried by said sides for pivotally receiving said comb sections.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of isconsin.
