' CHECK HOLDER.
Application filed January-17, 1928. Serial No. 247,400.
Another salient object of the invention is the provision of a mine car check holder comprising a body plate for connection directly with the side of a mine car having resilient means pivotally associated therewith and forming in connection with thebody plate jaws for engaging the check,
means being provided for permitting the.
quick release of the check the resilient means.
A further object of the invention is the provision of novel means for connecting the holding plate with the'body plate whereby by pressure on the use=of hinge barrels and hinge pins is I entirely eliminated.
r A still further object of'the invention is to provide a novel mine car check holder of the above character, which is durable and efficient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture and one which can be placed .upon the market and incorporated with a mine car at a low cost.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in a novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the mine car check holder,
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the same. Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the check holder,
Figure 4 is a holder, and V I Figure 5 is a transverse section through the check holder taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 2 looking in the direction. of the arrows. Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates the improved mine car check holder which com-' prises a body plate 10, a gripping plate 20,
front elevation of the check sired point.

and novel ineans 30 for holding the grip ping plate in proper frictional contact with the body plate. l
I The body plate lOis constructed from sheet metal of the desired gauge and includes a flap holding portion 11- and a right angularly extending depending attaching portion 12. This attaching portion 12'is. provided with suitable openings 13 for thereception of-fastening elements (not shown) whereby the entire device can be readily secured to the'side of a mining carat the de- The holding portion 11 ofthe body plateis of a greater length than the attaching portion 12 and the opposite side edges thereof adjacent to but spaced from the attaching portion 12are-provided with notches or cut out portions 14, the purpose of which, will be later described. Theholdng portion 11 forwardly ofthe notches 12 and at the longitudinal center thereof is provided with an opening 15, the purpose of which will also be later described. 4 The gripping plate 20 forms one of the sahent features of this invention and includes a' flat gripping main plate 21 having a depending right angularly extendingjaw 22 formed thereon. This jaw 22 extendstrans- .versely of the holding plate portion 11 of the body plate 10. Therear end of the gripping plate 21 has formed thereon the angularly extending finger grip operating portion 23 and it is to be noted that this portion 23 is ofa less width than the gripping plate portion 21 and that the finger grip portion 23 is connected withthe gripping plate portion 21 by an'arcuate b'ight portion 24 which forms the fulcrum on which the gripping member 20 rocks. Right angularly extending depending side tongues 25 are struck down from-the sides of the, gripping plate 21 on opposite sides of the bight 24 and these tongues 25 are positioned in the notches '14 and serve as means for limiting the movement of-the gripping plate 20 on the body plate 10. The gripping plate portion 21 at the longitudinal center thereof is provided with an opening 26 which is in direct alignment with the opening 15 formed in the holding plate portion 11. A headed bolt 31 forming a portion of the resilient holding means 30 is inserted through the aligned openings 15 and 26 with the head thereof in engagement with the upperface of the gripping plate portion 21. Thisbolt is of a less diameter than the diameter of the openings and=26 so as topennitthe rocking movement of thegripping plate 20, as Will be later described. An expansion coil spring 32 is placed upon, theshankof the bolt with the inner endthereof in engagement with the lower face of the holdi igplate portion 11 and its opposite ends in en gagement Withan adjustingnut 33 threaded upon the shank of'the bolt. Thus, it can be seen that the resilient .means .30: function to normallyhold the grippingplate portion 21 toward the holding plate 11 Withthejaw- 22 in contact Withlsaid holding plate portion 11.
