Specication of Letters Patent.l

Application mea .april 12, 1920. serial No. 373,031.

To all 'whom zz may concern.'

, Be it known that-I, WILLIAM HAGELSTEIN, a citizen of the United States and resident of New, York, in the county of ichmond and State of New York, have invented`certain new and useful Improvements in Clips, vof

which the following is a specication.

'The object of my invention is to provide al clip having opposing gripping'or clamping members and a spring member having arms located along the main members to retain them together and cause their y'gripping .action,

between them.

y invention comprises novel details of improvement more fully hereinafter'pointed out and set forth in the claims. Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof wherein- Figure 1 is 'a perspective view of a clip embodying my invention;

Fig. 2 is a section substantially on the plane of the line 2, 2 in Fig. 1 1

. Fig. 3 is a view like Fig. 2 showing the members spread to'receive an article; Fig. 2;

Fig. '5 is a perspective view showingmy improved clip particularly adapted to serve as a clothes pin;

Fig. 6 is a section on the plane of the line l e, ein rig. 5, and

Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 showing the members spread apart.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

he main members l, 2 of the clip have meeting faces adapted to be substantially parallel, and said faces may be provided with opposing recesses 3. A spring member is indicated at 4 shown having a central coil 4a from which the wire extends laterally in opposite directions at 4b, 4c from which opposing arms 4d, 4e extend along the outer parts of members 1, 2. The members l, 2 are provided with longitudinal recesses 5, 6 opening transversely l and along the outer si'des'of said members are grooves 7, 8 that communicate with the recesses 5, 6 respectively. The coil 4? and its side extensions 4b, 4c are located inA the rejarticle therebetween, faces of said members Fig. 4 isa section on the line 4, 4 in being pushed 'on through the members',

cesses 5, 6 andthe arms 4d, 4" arerespectively located in the grooves 7, 8. The free ends of arms 41,46 are extended laterally at 4f, 4g, and are preferably sharpened, to be driven or lentered into the material of members l, 2, as

by said members are retained from longitudinal displacement.

In the form ner aces of members 1,'2 beyond the coil 4Il are inclined from the inner meeting faces outwardly at 9, 10 to the respective ends of said members, so that said ends are normally spaced apart, whereby when said ends of members land 2 are gripped and squeezed by the operatorthe opposite ends of the members will be spread apart to receive an the adjacent meeting at 11 bearingagainst one another as a fulcrum. When the memcause them'to .approach to grip the article.

shown in Figs. 1 to 4 the in- In the form shown lin Figs. 5, 6 and 7 the gripping end portions 12 of members l and 2 are, beyond recesses 3, beveled or tapered to admit a clothes line, when the clip is pushed on the line, the clip thus serving as a clothes pin.' T 'e rear ends of members l and 2 are sho'wn reduced or -rounded at 13 to enable said members to swing freely when a clothes line or other article to be gripped. y improved clip may be used for various purposes usual with suchy devices for temporarily holding papers, and the like, a particular feature of advantage being that the spring member has a coil and the parts of said member are inclosedwithin the material of the members l, 2, the presence of the arms 4d, 4e in the grooves 7, 8 serving to retain members 1,'2 from separation by lateral strains, the ends 4f, 45 re taining the members 1, 2 in permanent relation, said arms clamping said members together.

Having thus described what l claim and desire to ters Patent is 1. A clip comprisingopposing members my invention, secure by Letvhaving opposing transverse recesses extendfabric, clothes free romthe members to permit the latter to swing Without bearing upon the Coil.

AV2. A clip comprising opposing members havlng opposing recesses extending through 5 the members, and a spring a e011 and lateral extenslons 1n said recesses, the sprmg member having therefrom Withmember having arms extending Jfrom said extensions along said members to clamp them together, the coil being Within said recesses free from said members to permit the latter to swing Without bearinO upon the'eoil'.

Signed at Noew York, in the county of New York and State of New York this 9th day oi April A. D. 1920.
