Specification forming part of 'Letters Patent No. 171,504, dated December 28, 1875; application filed October 7, 1875.

Be it known that I, HENRY W. CHASE, of
' Sumner, in the county of Oxford, State ofMaine,
and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use 'the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an isometrical perspective view.
My invention relates to that. class of carcouplers which work automatically, or are selfconpling; and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a simpler, cheaper, and more ei'ective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of my invention will be readily obvious to all conversant with such matters, from the following description In the drawing, A A represent draw-bars having the hollow heads B, and provided with elongated slots z z upon their upper sides. These bars have a series of holes, C, arranged vertically near their contiguous ends for receiving the pins or draw-bolts, H, which are inserted laterally in the heads, and kept in position by the buttons D. A rod, F, provided with hooks G upon either end, is inserted in the heads B, and may be raised or lowered or removed to uncouple the cars through the slots z z, when the draw-bar heads join or prevent access to it in any other manner.
It will be obvious that, by means of the pins i the hooks G and the draw-bars -A A, provided with the heads B, theseries of holes C, buttons D, pins H, and elongated slots zz, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially asset forth and specied.
