IMPROVEMENT lN SPIKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,486, dated December 28, 1875; application filed May 10, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE N. SANDERS, of the city of New York, State of New York, have invented the hereinafter-described Improved Spike, of which the following is the specification Referringto the figures in the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view, and'Fig. 2 a rear view, of the spike A.
B is a hollow or depression in the back of the spike; a b, the bevel, and b c d the concaving opposite the bevel.
Theimprovement herein consists in reducing the tail a be d. to a minimum thickness, and causing the whole of the concave surface b c d to act in a measurein resisting the extraction of the spike. The sides of the depression B maintain the perfect rigidity of the shank, which especially adapts this form to uses Where it is undesirable that the shank should bend.. The amount of metal moreover is reduced to a minimum, and the point a b 0 d to the greatest possible sharpness and thinness.
The exact shape of the hollow or depression is immaterial so long as the general form is preserved, and the surfaces described as curved are only such by preference, as if composed of approximating planes they would be of similar though inferior effect.
The shape of the head and of the perimeter of the shank is immaterial, except that they should befitted to the uses for which the spike is intended.
The various sizes are adapted to the uses of bolts, pins, nails, and similar fastenings adapted to being secured by being driven into wood or other material.
