My invention relates to valve operating mechanism for internal combustion motors and is concerned more particularly with a valve tappet arrangement in which the'several valve tappets are so formed and so related to the intake valves and to the exhaust valves of the motor as to admit of the proper operation of said valves, even tho such valves are disposed respectively at opposite sides of a plane passing thru the axes of the motor cylinders, by means of devices movable about an axis common to the total number thereof. Preferably, each valve tappet includes a stem portion and a head portion extending off from said stem portion at substantially a right angle, said head portion, intermediately of its free end and said stem, having formed thereon a bearing surface upon which on eof the actuating dcvices'is adapted to act.

In the embodiment of the invention illus inclusive, 1O designates the cylinder block or casting within which (but one of which is shown) are formed. Preferably, the cylinders 11 are cast en bloc. Each cylinder 11 is provided with an exhaust valve wort 12, and an intake valve port 13, said ports being so formed in the cylinder casting as to open outwardly and dicated in Figs. 2 and 3. the intake and exhaust ports 12 and 13 are so related one to the other and to the cylinder casting as to overlap or extend beyond the plane of the axes of the motor cylinders, such plane of the axes of the cylinders,

Hereto'fore, to provide for V the proper operation of i the intake and exhaust valves of a motor having its ports thus formed,separate cam shafts have been provided for each cylinder block orcasting', the one cam shaft being adapted to operate the one set of valves and the other cam shaft the other set of valves in view of the fact that such valves are disposed respectively atopposite sides of the plane above mentioned. In the present invention, instead of providing separate cam shafts for each set of valves, but a single cam shaft is provided. Such shaft is designated as 14, while the cams fastened to or formed upon it are designated as 15 a separate cam being provided for'each Valve regardless of the total number thereof.
The valves of the motor are conventional construction. The exhaust valves 16 have the stem portions thereof ex- ATENT A oFFIC L- of more or less thru the cylinder head block atone side ofthe whereas the tended on the opposite side of said plane, and as the cam shaft is disposed symmetrically with respect to said plane, obviously the valve stems are arranged respectively at opposite sides of the. cam shaft.
To admit of the proper operation of the valves thus opposed, valve tappets 18 are provided. Each tappet includes a stem or shank portion 19, a head portion 20 and a bearing surface 21, said head portion 20 being extended off from the stem portion at substanand consequently intersect theplane of the motor cylinder axes. Bearing surface 21 is preferably of arcuate form-and is formed upon the headportion of the valve tappet at a point near its juncture with the'stem. In the modification of, Figs. 4 to 6, inclusive, the valve arrangement is exactly as in the preferred.embodiment of'the invention illus tr'a'ted in Figs. 1 to 3.
