, INTERNAL-COMBUSTION nneiivn.
Appncatinn nea inner, 192s. seri-a1 No. 643,874.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines, and more particularly to the valve mechanism thereof.f
It has for an object to provide ari-engine in which a maximum valve port area is made available by the use 4of pairs of similar valves, arranged to operate inV unison.
Another object of the invention is to p roupper portion of `an internal combustion en gine equipped with the invention, and
Fig.` 2 is a plan view of the engine shown in Fig. 1, partially in `section on the line 2*,2 thereof.
The advantages of large valve port area have been recognized in internal combustion engine practice, and it has been heretofore proposed `to substitute for one intake and one exhaust valve in each of the engine cylinders, pairs of similar valves,y each of smaller diameter, but .of greater combined area. Under the high engine speeds now practiced, lack of synchroiiism seriously affects the gain in port area otherwise ac quired by such plural valve structure, and difliculties have arisen in effecting simultaneous operation of such valves. This invention provides a simple connection between valves of such pairs by which they are vactuated in absolute unison. i
Referring to the drawing, at 10 is shown an internalcombustion engine having acylinder 11, equipped with the usual piston 13, and carrying a head 12, which is provided with duplicate exhaust passages 14, one on each side thereof, and similar intake passages (not shown). These intake and exhaust passages are adapted for connection respectively with the usual intake and exhaustmanifolds (not shown), there being both an intake and an exhaust manifold on each sidel of the engine, as is well understood. f
The head 12 is provided with pairs of similar valves 16, of the well known poppet type, of which one pair is adapted to control the intake of fuel mixture to the engine cylinder, and the other pair is adaptedto per- `mit the expulsion of exhaust gases therefrom. As the construction and operation of the mechanism for these two sets of valves isin all particularsidentical, only the ex haust valve structure will be herein de-` scribed.
The valves 16 are provided with upwardly extending stems 17, mounted in suitable bushings 18 in the head structure 1Q. "The stems 17 project through the upper end of the cylinder head proper, and are adapted for connection near their upper ends with the usual spring abutments 19, which cooperate with springsi, bearing on the up' per surface of the cylinder head', `whcii springs serve to urge the valves 16 against` ttheir seats 22 in the well known manner,
Surrounding the valve stems 1 7 is an upwardly proJecting lug 23, preferably iiitegral with the cylinder head l2, and bored toy form cylindrical guides 2li, which Y coaxial with the valve stems 17. Slidably mounted in cach of the guides il is a 'guide member 26, which'is preferably of thin'sheet metal, drawn into the form of a cup, and. provided on its upwardly'disposed face 27 with av boss 28. The bosses 28 are drilled and threaded for cooperation with tappet screws 29, the lower ends of which contact the ends of the valve stems 17. The upper ends of the tappet screws 29 are slotted, as at 30, to facilitate their axial adjustment with respect to the bosses 28.
A horizontally disposed yoke member 31 -is arranged to rigidly `connect the guide members 26. This `yoke member 31 has `preferably two similar end portions 32, and
an intermediate portion 33 of greater thickness. The end portions 32 `are each provided with an opening 34- adapted to einbrace the upwardly Vdisposed boss 28 on the guide member Q6. Thelower face of the yoke member 31 rests upon the upper face vof the guide member 2G and these members are clamped together by a washer and nut assembly 3G, threaded on the extremities of the tappets 17. The intermediate portion 'B2-3 ofthe yoke .member 31 has an upwardly dis` posedl face`87, in aplane above tlieend perL understood, however, that push rods, rocker arms, or any other suitable operating mech.- anisin may be employed to actuate the yoke member 31.
In the operationof the invention, rotation in the familiar manner,` the valves, tappetm. guide members and yoke lbeing returned to:
their initial position by the springs 2l.
'Ihe guide members 26 receive ,all side thrust thatis coioniunicated to the yoke member 31 bythe cam 30, and traiisi'er it to the guides 24, where it is absorbed, so that the valve stems 17 Work freely. in their guides 18 Without any tendency v to bind therein. l
The guide members 26, being rigidlycoir nected by the yoke member 31. reciprocate in the guides 24 as a unit, and because. loit' their extensive bearing surface areitree from binding and twisting therein. In this mana'A ner synchronous and equal travel` of Vthe valves 16 isensured, and the advantages of the plural valves fully realized.
It Will be understood that various forms of the invent-ion other than those described above may be used Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
What yis claimed is:
