SOAP CHIPPER Filed Aug. 25, 1927 INVENTOR Woodw d I e-any ATTORNEY Patented May 21, 1929.
"UN'TEDSTAT'ES T T JOHN A. WOODWARD, OF LEETONIA, AND LEO GREANY, CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SOAP CHIPPER.
Application filed August 25, 1927. Serial No. 215,418.
In carrying out these objects, the invention is susceptible of a wide range of m0dification without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the claimed invention; there being shown in the drawings for illustrative purposes a preferred and practical form, in which:
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of the device constituting this invention shown mounted on a receptacle the latter also being in sections Fig. 2 is a plan view of the chipper.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view thereof with the cutting blade removed and arranged in juxtaposition ready for assembling; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
This chipper which is primarily intended for chipping soap flakes although obviously it may be used for slicing or chipping other articles, comprises a base board 1 having a cut-out portion 2 extending obliquely and transversely of the board. This cut-out portion 2 terminates short of the side edges of the board 1 and the board on its upper face adjacent the cut-out portionis mortised to form a shelf 3 with a shoulder 4 at the rear thereof against which the cutting blades presently to be described are designed to abut.
A plate-like blade 5 is designed to be seated on the shelf 3 with its rear edge abutting the shoulder 4 and its front edge beveled and sharpened for cutting purposes as shown at 6. This blade is inclined upwardly and forwardly to position its cutting edge fi slightly above the upper face of the board 1 as is customary in devices of this character and the blade is secured to the board by screws 7.
Arranged transversely of the cut-out portion 2 in the board 1 are a plurality of longitudinally disposed cutting knives 8, three of which are here shown. extend across the opening 2 under blade 5 and have the ends thereof embedded in the board 1 the rear ends abutting the shoulder 1 as is shown clearly in Fig. 3.
Attached to the lower face of the board 1 near the end thereof is a clip 10 having longitudinally spaced laterally extending lips 11 and 12 which are designed to straddle the edge of a vessel 9 to hold the chipper in position when in use. This vessel 9 of course forms a receiver for the chips cut off by the chipper;
The splitting knives 8 are constructed of suitable weight steel and when the soap or other object to be chipped is moved over the board in the direction of the arrow (1 shown in Fig. 1 it will be cut by the edge 6 of the blade 5 and divided into ribbon-like chips by the blades 8.
-Without further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent-to those skilled in the art, and it will of'course be understood that changes in the form proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope as claimed.
We claim 7 p 1. A device of the class described comprising a base board having an opening extending transversely thereof one face of said board being mortised out at one side of said opening and provided with a shoulder, a cutting blade mounted in said mortised portion one edge abutting said shoulder and with its cutting edge spaced slightly from and above said opening at the edge opposite the shouldered edge, and a splitting blade extending across said opening at an angleto the first mentioned These blades 8' blade and lying under said first mentioned opening and provided with a shoulder, a cut-.
ting blade adapted to be mounted in said inortised portion With one edge abutting said shoulder and its cutting edge spaced slightly from and above said opening at the edge 5 opposite the shouldered edge, and a splitting blade extending across said opening at an an gle to the first mentioned blade and lying under said blade, said splitting blade having the ends thereof embedded in the board and one of said ends abutting said shoulder whereby in said blades are securely held in position With out the use of auxiliary fastening elements.
