Appuoezion med april is, 192s. semi No. 032,897.
To all Iwhom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, vDON Pannna MooN, a
citizen of the United States, residin i at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and tate of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor-Blade Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it-appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in razor blade holders and consists more particularly in a device for holding used or unused safety razor blades o practically any make in such way that 'the device and blade in combination may be used as a knife, or for a variety of other purposes, such as ripping seams, sharpening pencils, cutting leather and fur, stencil cutting, wood block carving, Whittling, trimming wall paper, erasing ink from drawing paper, paring corns, as a paper cutter and letter opener, in kitchen work for peeling` and cutting, for chopping meats, nuts and vegetables, as a putty knife, for stropping or honing razor blades and for numerous,
other uses which will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in this art.
It is an object ofthe invention to pro- P vide a simple,` inexpensive and readily manipulated device for carrying out the above and other purposes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention will be more fully described hereinafter, and will be more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings,L wherein like symbols refer to like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, j
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an improved razor blade holder constructed according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same showing the locking lever in the raised position.
Figure 3 is a vertical section with the locking-'lever closed, and
Figure 4 is an end view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 designates a handle of wood or other appropriate material shaped to fit the hand ofl the user and formed with a recess 6 in its outer end for receiving the clamp composed of the jaws 7 and 8 spaced apart an PATENT oFFicE.
.ni-:ISSUED adequate distance to receive therebetween a razor blade indicated at 9.
The clamp may be made in one iece as `indicated in Figures 2 and 3 and a at strip by the use of a cam or eccentric 10 carried upon a locking lever 11 which is provided with an elongated handle adapted to lie flush in a recess 12 made in the wooden handle 5. The arrangement is such that the hand of the user of the device in grasping the wooden handle will also encompass the handle of the locking lever 11 and the mere act of holding the device will therefore further operate to avoid anyv possibility of the escape of the razorblade due to the accidental movement of the locking lever. The locking lever is secured upon a pin or fulcrum 13 passing through the head of a bolt 14 which is threaded into a nut 15 mounted at the outer side of the jaw 7.
The jaws 7 and 8 of the clamp extend well beyond the end of the wooden handle to facilitate the insertion ofthe-blade and to rovide a suliicient area of contact between the blade and the jaws without interference from the bolt 14. The locking lever is biurcated at its pivoted end as more clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 4 and the two forks o'f the lever straddle the head of the bolt 14 and thus in elect two cams or eccentrics 10 result, one at-each side of thebolt and bearing equally u'pon the outer face of the jaw 8. Of course the arrangement and disposition of the lobes of the cams is such that the tendency will be to hold the handle of the lever '11 close against the wooden handle 5 by the inherent elasticity inthe clamp. The clamp is secured in place by the use of an anchoring screw 16 or the like which is threaded through the handle in a transverse direction and through openings made to-receive same inthe jaws 7 and 8.
In the use of the device the blade 9 may be inserted between the open jawseither'v sidewise or endwise as indicated in Figure 1 according to the use to which the device is put. The insertion is made when the ing the raising of the lever, the recess 12 in the wooden handle is preferably slightly longer than such lever thereby admitting of the insertion of the linger or an implement behind the lever to pry it up. In this position the lobes of the cam ride away from the outer face of the jaw 8 and the inherent elasticity of the clamp will cause the jaws to open. After the blade is inserted the lever 11 is swung down to the position shown in Figures 1 and 3 thus exerting, due to the long handle, relatively great turning moment. i,
The cam will thus lock the jaws together upon the blade and the blade will be held firmly and will resist any tendency to dislocation during use.
It will be appreciated that by reason of the projecting character of the clamp jaws the blade may be inserted sidewise without interference from the handle as the sides of the jaws are open and this ability to receive the blade in not only an endwise but also a sidewise manner is responsible for the greater utility of the device. While I have mentioned a few uses for the implement it will of course be understood that I do not restrict myself to the same as no doubt the improved tool will be found useful for many other purposes.
it is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specilically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being re stricted only by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is 1. A razor blade holder comprising a handle, a clamp carried thereby for receiving the blade, and a cam lever operating upon said clamp -to hold the blade therein, said lever adapted to lie alongside of said handle.
2. A razor blade holder comprising a handle. a clamp carried therein having normally open jaws adapted to receive a safety razor blade, a cam lever carried by said handle and adapted to lie in close position substantially parallel with the handle, said cam lever acting upon said clamp to force the jaws thereof together on said blade.
3. A razor blade holder comprising a handle having a recess in one end and a slot along its top portion, a pair of clamp jaws fitted in said recess and projecting beyond said recess and having open front and side portions, means to anchor the jaws in said recess and to the handle, a bolt passing through said jaws, a cam lever havin a bifurcated cam end pinned to said bo t and operating upon the jaws to move the same together, said cam lever adapted to swing down into the slot made in the top part of said handle.
