UNITED STATES 1 1,713,567 PATENT OFFICE.
SIDNEY SULLIVAN, OF HOUNSLOW, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO SULLIGROS PATENTS LIMITED, OF HOUNSLOW, ENGLAND,.A BRITISH COMPANY.
FASTENER FOR WEARING APPAREL.
Application filed June 21, 1927, Serial No. 200,430, and in Great Britain June 21, 1926.
This invention relates to improvements in wearing apparel, more particularly means for supporting trousers and the like. The method of attaching braces to trousers as heretofore proposed by means of buttons on the trousers and button holes in the brace ends is open to the objection that the buttons frequently come off. Now, it is the chief object of this invention to overcome this 1 defect.
According to this invention, the trousers or the like are provided, in the place of the usual buttons, with holes and the brace ends are in two parts adapted to be placed one on each side of the trousers or the like and to be brought together and/or united at their ends through the holes in the trousers or the like.
This invention ma be carried into effect in many ways, some 0 which are illustrated in the accompanying drawing by way of illustration and not of limitation.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is an elevation of the supporting means according to this invention and Figures 2, 3, and 4 are side elevations of convenient forms of clips according to this invention. 7
Referring to the drawings, the top of the trousers a is provided with holes 6 in place of the usual buttons, the said holes being provided with metal, leather or other suitable eyelets a if desired. Or, the edges of the hole may be stitched as is usual with button holes, if desired. The eyelets and stitching may if desired be of the same colour as the trousers.
The fastening clip illustrated in Figure 2, comprises a strip of metal 0 provided with a loop (1 at one end for attachment to the brace strap e and at the other or free end with aprojecting stud 7 adapted to be passed through the hole I) in the trousers a. To the front of the strip 0 and between two upstanding ears 0 is hinged a flap g which is of such length as to lie on top of the stud f when in its depressed position. This flap is spring controlled in any suitable manner, for example, the flap 9 may be provided with a right angled rearwardly extending projection g at the hinge co-acting with a spring tongue It provided on the strip, the said spring tongue It being provided with a raised portion or hump h which passes through an aperture in the strip 0 and over which the rearward projection g is adapted to ride as will be readily understood.
In some cases, the flap 9 may be provided with a press stud fastener j to snap over the stud j on the strip 0 or on the top of the stud f as shown in Figure 2.
The stud f may be riveted to the strip 0, the said rivet also serving to secure the spring tongue h to the strip. The stud is also of reduced diameter in the centre and may be provided with a shoulder f as shown whereby any tendency of the trousers to place the strain on the front of fastening will be prevented, thus providing a secure fastening in which the liability of the trousers to force open the fastening will be reduced to a minimum. Further, the stud may, if desired, be hollow. 4
Another form of this invention, comprises a hooked metal member (Figure 4) which may be dished at its bent end the space between the end of the hook and the end of the member to be attached to the braces being closed by a spring controlled flap 9.
Although this invention has been more particularly described with reference to trousers, it will be obvious that it is equally applicable to other garments and undergarments more particularly such as are suspended by means of straps or braces.
I claim 1. A clip member for a garment support comprising a substantially flat rigid member having a slot between its ends'and having at one end means for attaching a garment support thereto, a strip of spring metal secured to the rear face of said member and havin a portion projecting toward said slot, a stud mounted on the front face of said member at a distance from said slot and adapted to be inserted through a hole in a garment, said stud having a concave surface, and a second rigid member hinged between its ends to said firstnamed member adjacent said slot, said second rigid member having one end bent toward the first-named member opposite said slot and normally bearing against the projecting portion of said spring clip, and its other end normally bearing against the free end of said stud.
2. A clip member for a garment support, comprising a substantially flat rigid member having a slot between itsends and having at one end means for attaching a garment support thereto, andhaving at its other end a member for insertion through a hole in a garment, the latter member having a concavity directed toward the opposite end of the first-named member, a second rigid member hinged between its ends to the front face of the first-named member between the ends of the latter and having one end bent toward said slot, a strip of spring metal secured to the rear face of said first-named member and having at one of its ends a hump extending into said slot to engage the bent end of said second rigid member and hold the other end of said member in or out of contact with said concaved member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
SIDNEY SULLIVAN.
