Application filed February 411927;Serial'NoQ 1 e5,953;jana-inrranc February 6, 1926'.
This invention relates toabi-nding for books which is strong and handy," designed to be applied instantaneously 'upon'stitched volumes of all kinds 'to which it gives the appearanceof bound books suitable to be placed in a'book-case. I f The binding according to'the present invention comprises essentially two rigid 'slidable hooks 'placed'on the'edgesinythe interior of the panels. It will-'be evident that the present system of binding allows oi assemblin togetherin the same cover sev eral pamphlets or even loose sheets: I i In the case ofpamphlets they are provided with longitudinal wires inserted between the sheetsand provided at bot'h'ends with beads of appropriate shape which are retained side by side in transverseguides securedon both sides by means of the hooks already mentioned. In the case of loosesheetsthe latter are assembled by means of special clips provided with guides allowing the'fixation on "wires similar to those of the p'amplets In this manner sections and loose sheets of all kinds may be assembled in the same cover-by the same devices. i r q -I The present system allows also to place on both sides of bound books loosesheetsretainedin'position by the covers and designed to be used for various purposes suchas advertisements', 'notes,-etc; i F-i The appended drawings illustrate-asexamples variousmanners of execution of the improved binding; objectofthe invention, in

Fig.-15-is a*sect1onal view of a wire online 15-15 of Fig. 14. to '6 the sides board triangular pieces c leavingthe longi tudinal sides-o'penbetween said pieces and the parts are assembled together by means of bands d and{corner pieces '6 'fixed by an ad hesivematerial'. The interior panels (a? are 'each 'p'rovidedwith two paper or linen pieces f glued 'uponft-heln and forming sleeves or 'socketsin which pins '9' are 'slidably mounted.
The inner endofachpin is bent to form a short lug-gf -while the outer endhas a relativelylon'ghook 9? formed by bending the pin back onto itself; i h The two sides a,-a b,ib are assembled together by means-of a part h, as will be. seen [in Fig; 5,*which passe's'into' the 1 space le ft= between the panels and -isafterwards "folded onto both sides as at h shown in Figs. 1, 7* and 8. The part i is provided in Y its middle portion which f rms the back of. -the-bookcov er. with'anopening i to show "the title of the bookand 'the -authors name. AsshowninFigu6, ja loosesheet y is provided with a lateral tongue 3'}, preferably made integral therewith and'adapted tobe introduced into the's'pace formed between each-pair of pan'els. There; 1nay be any numher of such sheets and they are utilized for different purposes such as advertising, for -notes, etc.
v It will be understood that mother "give a good appearance to the whole the material employed for making the corners e, the bands cland the back hwill be preferably identical. Likewise the fold of the loose sheets j which is seen in'ipart through the opening 2' will have preferably the same ap pearance as the back h.
The mode of operation of the'bind-ing made in the manner-thus described is as follows. Assuming the hooks g to be i njthe position shown in Fig, 1, the stitched is placed on edge anda few back and front leaves. respectively are folded back and caught atthe top and therbotto'm by i'pushing in the hooks causing the pins .59 to slide in the sleeves f. The connecting part h is then drawn tight, care being taken to place the opening 1' in the middle, when the ends 72, are folded back the binding is completed.
In the casewhere sevenal pamphletsam to be boundtogether, the same covers may .be usedbut the hooksg' of the pins .9 can then enter a movable metal guide lg-seen in Fig. 7, which determines the width of the back of the cover. There is one of these metal guides at each end, which are preferably of T-shape interiorly in order to allow introducing endwise wires Z; proyided with a flat head m preferably of cylindrical shape upon which the pamphlets n to be bound are simply folded as will be seen in I edges thereof and forming a transverse Fig. 12. The outer side is? of each guide is, has an aperture k near each end to receive the hooks g of the wires $9,113 shown in Figs. 9 and 13. The back of the guide extends be'yond the sides as shown n t [c to insure the rigidity of the back while thepins .g and hooks operate as hinges and lie in the plane of the pins 1 asshown in Fig. 11. The guides are preferably secured in place by means of small collars, (Fig. 13) which have a portion 1* of substantially the same shape in cross section to thejcr0sssection of the guides and anextended flange r by means of which the collars may be riveted to the back portion h. A Itwill easily beseen that in order to bind togetherseveral pamphlets previously provided with wires it will be sufficient-to engage the topv ends of the latter in the guldes is, and then connect the guides to the back it by causing said guides 70 to enter the collars r and finally'to'lock the four hooks-g in the guides 70. In order to prevent the wear and'tear by friction of lugs 'gfthey may be covered over by two flexible flaps 0 secured in the middle of the panels, as will be seen in Figswf and 8. i, The binding of loosesheets will be effected by means of spring clips 4) simply formed by stamping for instance in a sheet of' metal andsubsequently bent sofas to form when folded a cylindrical hinge g for engagement upon the wires Z, the length of said hinges} greater than the width of the clips order to avoid the tearing of the leaves when the clips are put, ;in juxtaposition. The front half lpropriate metal coating such as nickel, silver,
etc, and be provided with 'signsfor classisuch as the letters of the alphabet. Having now described my invention I declare that what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A book and leaf binder comprising side members each formed of superposed panels, spacing members interposed between the panels and forming transverse spaces betweenthe latter opening .at the longitudinal edges offthe .panels, and a back forming member extending longitudinally between said side members and having lateralportions extending. through said transverse spaces, the free ends of the lateral portions {adapted to be folded onto and secured to the inner panels.
2. A book and leafbinder comprising side members each formed of superposed panels, triangular spacing pieces interposed between the panels at the upper and lower triangular spacing pieces interposed between the panels at the upper. and lower edges thereof and forming a transverse space between the, panels-said space converglng from the inner to the outer edges of the panel, a back formingmember extendinglongitud-inally betweenthe inner longitudinal edges of the side members, said back forming member having lateral converging portions extending through the transverse spaces, the free ends of the lateral portions being folded over and secured to the inner panels of the side members, and means at the corners of V the superposed panels for connecting them together. I v
4. A book and leaf binder comprising side members, each formed of superposed panels,
