Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 17 l ,307, dated December 21, 1875; application filed v November 17, 1875;
To albwhom it may concern: f
Beit known that I, LYMAN NOLTON Vof city of Hillsdale, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andV to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
rlhe nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a carpetstretcher, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, Figure lis a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the lsame through the line .1: .'10, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the line y y,
' Fig. l.
A A represent two parallel side bars, connected by means of cross-bars B B, and provided at their front ends with L-shaped points C C, as shown. The inner sides of the bars A A are grooved longitudinally, and in the same slides a frame or gate, D,havin g a head, E, at its front end underneath, and extending beyond the side bars A. The head E is provided with teeth a, or their equivalents, for
taking hold of the carpet to be stretched.
On top of one of the `side bars A is pivoted a lever, G, which works between pins b b on the frame D to more the same back and forth. The points C are to be fastened in the floor close to the Wash-board, the stretcher-frame resting on top of the carpet. The teeth of the head E are then fastened in the carpet, and, by means of the lever G, the frame D is moved forward, stretching the carpet with it up to the wall. The lever may then be held by another pin while the carpet is being tacked down. This device may be made of wood or metal, as desired, and is simple, cheap, and durable, and not liable to get out of order.
Having thus fully described `my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by. Letters Patent, is-
'lhe combination of the grooved frame A B,
l with points G O, the -sliding frame D, with toothed head E, the leverG, and pinsb, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LYMAN NOL'FON.
