* sALEs BOOK ATTACHMENT Filed March 21, 1927 lNVENTOR ATTOR N EY WITNESS:
Patented May 14, 1929.
UNITED STATES i WALTER O. GRITCHFIELD, OF SHELBY, OHIO, ASSIG-NOR TO SHELBY IPANY, O13 SHELBY, OHIO.
PATENT OFFICE.
SALEEiBOOK CUM SALES-BOOK AT'IACHMENEII.
Application filed March 21, 1927. Serial no. 177,066.
The object of this invention is to provide a salesbook including main and supplemental series of leaves or sheets mounted in separate holders, and acuti'zing edge or straight edge to be carried by the element mounting the main series oi sheets, and adapted to be moved.
to operative position, where it is employed to facilitate the tearing oil of sheets from the supplementary book along a line adjacent to the mounting device for this series.
A. further object is to avoid the necessity oi? employing perforated sheets in the supplemental series or employing a row of stitching especially for the purpose, which involves additional labor and cost, in the production of the books in quantities.
A further object is to provide a straight edge for the purpose indicated, which shall comprise a flat metallic blade or plate having slots at an angle with the cutting edge and adapted to be moved into and out of operative position, in the manner indicated below, the blade being movably mounted by means of pins, rivets or the like.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming part of this application,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the salesbook in open position.
Figure 2 is a view showing the rear side of the mounting device for the series of sheets on the right of Figure 1, the blade or plate being illustrated in closed position, whereas, in Figure 1, it is in operative position.
Figure 3 represents a section in a plane indicated by line 33 of Figure 2, but shows the metallic plate on the under side oi. the cover or back, or normal inoperative position.
Figure 4L is a perspective view of the cutting device or straight et lge, detached.
The main series ol leaves or sheets is shown at the right of Figure l, and is designated 10, this series being mounted in a spring controlled clamp shown more or less eonveir tionally and designated 12. The sheets of this series are to be double sheets, and carbon sheets are interposed between the leaves de signed to carry the written n'iatter.
l. he package oi leaves or sheets designated 10 is mounted on the right hand portion '13 oil the cover, this portion being iioldable at 13 over the back 141-, the opposite element oi the cover being designated 1.5 and adapted to carry a supplemental series of leaves or sheets, as indicated at .16. The sheets of series 16 are for use in cmijunction with those oi the main series dcsignz'uxed 1t), and these sheets .iti are retained by a clamp or suitable holdmg (.levice, a portion of which is shown conventionally and is designated 1.8. This clamp or sheet holding device 18 may include metallic strips coiinected by any suitable headed element, no importance being attached to the type of device used for bold-- mg sheets 10, except that it may be positioned to prevent accidei'ital n'ioven'lent ol element 2].. Between the series thus mounted at the left of Figure 1, and. the series mounted at the right, is a space, as indicated at 19, and this space is between the flexible edge portion or back of the book 20, and the series o'l sheets designated 10. The clamping element 18 may be substantially on a line with the edge of portion 14 of the book cover, or the back thereof.
In order to avoid the use oi perforated sheets at the left of Figure 1, oi oi? sheets which have been provided with a separate row of stitching, and thereby perforated, l provide a straight edge, plate, or blade, desigI- nated 21, and shown in several 01 the vimvsi but appearing in perspective in Figure i:- This plate or straight edge 21. is provided with slots 22 which extend at an angle with the edge or edges of the plate, and retaining devices oi? any suitable type, headed on opposite ends, as shown in Figure 3, pass thru the slots 22, and are designated 23.
Sheet niiounting device 13 has been described as being toldable at 1.8, and the lingers of the user may therefore be inserted under the bottom or left edge by raising that edge. The device 21 is readily movable from an inoperative position, behind the elen'ient 13 of Figure 1, to an operative position, where it extends across the space 19, and just overlaps the line defined by clamping device 18, so that a straight edge is provided permitting of the tearing ofi of any of the sheets from the pile designated 16, in an obvious manner. A clear cut is thereby provided, and there is no interference at any time With the use of the book by the mounting of the knife or edge 21, as the latter is immediately restored, after use, to inoperative position.
Having described the invention what is claimed is H 1. A salesbook, comprising a plurality of cover members flexibly connected, a foldable sheet mounting device secured at its outer edge to one of said cover members, a second sheet mounting device for a supplemental series of sheets, secured to one of the cover members, and a plate providing a straight edge carried by the foldable sheet mounting device and slidable therefrom toward the series of supplemental sheets.
2. A salesbook, comprising a plurality of cover members flexibly connected, a foldable sheet mounting device secured at its outer edge to one of said cover members, a second sheet mounting device, for a supplemental series of sheets, secured to the same cover member, a plate having a straight edge, and having slots therein at an angle with said edge, and means passing thru the slots for connecting the plate with the underside of the foldable sheet mounting device.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WALTER o. CRITCHFlELD.
