RADIATOR CAP Filed May 21, 1927 11v VENTQR i/00m 3 clan/w Patented May 14, 1929. l "l; l
PATENT OFFICE.
UNITED STATES tinge-s WILLIAM B. JARVIS, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
RADIATOR GAP.
Application filed. May 21,
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved radiator cap adapted as a support for an ornament which permits the positioning of the ornament as maybe desired relative to the cap as it is supported upon a radiator.
A further object is to provide in a radiator cap a means for mounting an ornament or emblem or the like in which the object is effectively supported and has the appearance of being an integral part of the cap.
Objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation of my invention will appear from the detailed description to follow.
The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A. structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a radiator cap embodying the features of my invention, a single portion only of. an ornament being shown, the body portion being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the body of the ornament being broken away.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamp ing disc.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a spring washer which I preferably employ.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, the body of the cap 1 is adapted to receive the neck of the radiator. This cap is chambered and provided with a central hole 2 through the top, this hole having an upwardly facing shoulder 3 in the embodiment illustrated.
4 represents the shank of an ornament to be supported, this shank having a flat portion 5 with an annular depending rib 6 on the outside thereof engaging in the seat formed by the shoulder 3 in the cap, thus effectively positioning the parts. This shank has a central opening 7 therein which is engaged by a shoulder 8 of the head 9, the head preferably having an ornamental exterior harmonizing with the lines of the cap.
The head 9 is cast upon a bolt 10, the head in effect constituting the head of the bolt. The bolt depends within the cap to receive the clamping disc 11 which is pref- 1927. Serial No. 193,299.
erably concavo convex, as illustrated, and
arranged with its periphery engaging the shoulder 12 within the cap. 7 i
A spring washer 13 having a plurality of radial spring fingers 1d is arranged between thlsclamping disc and the clamping nut 15.
With the parts thus arranged, the ornament may be adjusted on the cap to accommo date for variations in threads the cap is turned or adjusted to the particular radiator neck on which it is used.
Th ornament is mounted or secured so that it has the appearance of forming an integral part of the cap.
The parts are economical to produce and very readily assembled.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a radiator cap, the combination of.
a chambered body member having an openmg in the top thereof provided with an upwardly facing shoulder, an ornament pro vided with a horizontally disposed shank having an annular rib on its under side seated 011 said shoulder, said shank having a hole therein centrally of said rib, a bolt provided with a shouldered head engaged in said opening in said shank, a concavoconvex clamping disc arranged on said bolt within said cap, its periphery engaging the cap, a washer provided with a plurality of radial spring fingers disposed below said clamping disc, and a clamping nut on said bolt.
2. In a radiator cap, the combination of a chambered body member having an opening in the top thereof provided with an up wardly facing shoulder, an ornament provided with a horizontally disposed shank having an annular rib on its under side seated on said shoulder, said shank having a hole therein centrally of said rib, a bolt provided with a shouldered head engaged in said opening in said shank, a clamping disc arranged on said bolt within said cap,
its periphery engaging the cap, and a clamp ing nut on said bolt.
3. In a radiator cap, the combination of a chambered body member having an opening in the top thereof, an ornament provided with a shank seated on said cap, said shank having an opening therein, a bolt disposed through said openings in said shank and cap to depend within the cap, a clamping disc arranged on said bolt with its periphery engaging Within the cap, and a clamping nut on said bolt.
4. In a radiator cap, the combination of a chambered body member having an opening in the top thereof, a member mounted on said cap and having a shank provided w th an annular rib engaging said opening in said cap, a clamping boltarranged through said shank, and means for securing said bolt disposed Within said cap. 7
5. In a radiator cap, the combination of a chambered body member having an open- "ing in the top'thereof, a member mounted on said cap provided with a shank seated on said cap, said shank having an opening WILLIAM B. JARVIS.
