UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WATERPROOF CUINTAINIER.
Application filed August 1, 1927. Serial No. 209,982.
This invention relates to improvements Wat r proof containers.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a water tight receptacle which may be carried by a person while bathing or swin'iming and in which money and valuables may be securely kept.
Another object or the invention resides in a safety water tight container which is con" structed of metal or other appropriate material, but which is relatively light in weight so as to fioat upon the surface of the water should the same accidentally become sepa rated. from the user.
A further object is the provision of a water proof container which may be carried about the waist 01? a wearer or as a hand bag, and which may he made in such shapes and designs as not to be objectionable to the appear ance of a wearer. a
A still further object is to provide a water proof container which includes an outer shell member, and an inner shell member removably supported from a cap and disposed with.- in the outer shell member, the said cap serving to seal the outer shell member to exclude moisture from the inner shell member into which the valuables to be kept are placed.
A still further object is to provide an article of the above kind which is simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and efficienttor the purposes intended.
With these and other objects in View, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinatter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2-2 oi: Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view with the parts in a separated position.
Referring more particuarly to the drawing, the reference numeral designates my improved water proof. container in its entirety, and which includes a hollow body or outer shell 11 which has its bottom concaveconvex, so that the body is deeper at its center than at its sides. The outer shell. 11 is provided in its top with an opening 12, the walls of which are screw threaded as at 13 for co-acting engagement with the external threads 14 provided on a flange 15 extending inwardly from a cover 16. 'An annular flange 1'? extends beyond the flange 15 to overlie and seat withinan annular recess 18 provided in, the top of the outer shell. A gasket 19 is interposed between the flange 17 and the recess 18 to seal the joint therebetween against leakage.
The flange 15 is also provided with internal screw threads 20 for co-action with external screw threads 21 provided on an inner shell which is of a. depth to snugly tit within the outer shell member. A gasket 23 is in terposcd between the inner shell 22 and the inner top wall o l the cover 16. For the purpose oi? manually imparting a turning movement to the cover during the screwing and unscrewing oi. the same, to the outer shell member, 1 provide n'ianipulating lugs 24 on the cover at diametrically opposite points. These two lugs are grasped by the lingers or an operator during the turning of the cover with respect to the outer shell.
The outer shell, 11 is provided with diametrically opposed eyes or loops 25 for receiving the ends of a strap by which the device may be carried either about the waist of a user or in the manner of a hand bag.
The outer and inner shells and cap may be constructed of any suitable light-imitcrial such as aluminium and may be die cast or stamped so that the same provides a relatively light structure. The container may be shaped in any suitable design and in a manner so that it displaces more than its weight of water which makes the device buoyant so as to float upon the surface of the water should the same become accidentally separated from the owner.
in practice, the cover 16 is unscrewed from the outer shell member, and the inner shell member in turn unscrewed from the cover, whereupon articles oil value may be placed within the inner shell and the cover screwed thereon. The cover and inner shell new constitute a single unit whichis in turn threaded to the outer shell member and screwed tight thereagainst and at which time the inner shell n'iember is enclosed within the outer shell. In the event that water should seep through the gasket 19 into the inner shell member or bilge compartment, it would not in any way reach the valuables within the inner shell, as it would be necessary for the liquid to pass the joint between the cover and the inner shell, which gasket 23. e
For ornamental purposes, the cover and body may have suitable designs engraved thereon, but this is optional. Also in addition to the uses pointed out above, the outer joint is sealed by the shell may be utilized by campers as a contamer for cooking foods.
Vhile I have describedwhat I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invenouter shell member having an opening therein, the Walls of said opening bein screw threaded, a cover having a flange provided with external and internal screw threads the external threads of said flange co-acting with the threads of said opening, and an inner shell member having screw threads for coaction with the internal screw threads of said flange.
2. A water proof container comprising an outer shell member having an opening, therein, the walls of said opening being screw threaded, a cover having a flange provided with external and internal screw threads, the external threads of said flange co-acting with the threads of said opening, an inner shell member having screw threads for co-action with the internal screw threads of said flange, and gaskets respectively interposed between said cover and said outer and inner shell members.
3. A buoyant container comprising a rigid outer shell having an opening therein, a cover including a flange threadedly secured within said opening; thereby forming a watertight, compartment, and an inner shell threadedly secured to the inner face of said flange. thereby forn'iing another watertight (annpartment ,within the first mentioned com nirtim-nt.
In testimony whereof I hereby atlix my signature.
